In today's evolving educational landscape, the ‘broker teacher’ plays a pivotal role. These educators manage cross-sector partnerships involving government, business and non-profit sectors to introduce innovative practices in schools. This study seeks to explore broker teachers' nuanced roles and the perceptions, which have not yet been extensively studied. Applying the Zaltman Metaphor Elicitation Technique, our research focuses on broker teachers in Hong Kong, investigating how they enact their roles and influence innovative practices through these partnerships. By focusing on the perspective of broker teachers, this study diverges from previous research that often concentrated on schools' external partners. As such, the study highlights the unique challenges and opportunities that broker teachers face as agents of change. In three case studies, we show how broker teachers align their roles with the stakeholders' expectations during school initiatives. The findings unearth the dynamic nature of broker teachers' roles, highlighting the need for explicit role definitions and robust support structures. These elements are fundamental for broker teachers to effectively navigate the complexities of cross-sector partnerships and to drive sustainable educational reforms. Context and implications Rationale for this Study: Schools' cross-sector partnerships are rapidly developing to drive educational innovation. Research understood these partnerships as brokering activities. However, educational brokering is under-studied from the perspective of the broker teacher, who is in charge of the partnership from within the school. Why the New Findings Matter: This study investigated the nuanced roles of broker teachers, highlighting their more specific roles. For practitioners, this study underscores the importance of clear role definitions and robust support structures for broker teachers to effectively manage cross-sector collaborations. Objective: Physical activity (PA) is critical for healthy development in preschoolers, with long-lasting benefits that can affect later life. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that children aged 5–17 years should engage in 60 min of moderate-to-vigorous PA per day. However, physical inactivity in children is on the rise globally, with declines in PA starting at the age of 4 years. Increasing PA during early childhood is important to delay adiposity rebound, promote behavioral changes, improve physical fitness, and facilitate future PA engagement. However, limited evidence has been established on the effects of school-based PA interventions on preschoolers. This study examines the effects and sustainability of a preschool-based PA intervention on increasing PA, improving physical fitness and health in preschoolers, with the exercise dose benchmarked to the WHO PA guidelines. Methods: This assessor-blinded, two-arm cluster randomized controlled trial will include 3300 preschoolers (aged 5–6 years) from 110 kindergartens in Hong Kong, China. Kindergartens will be randomized into intervention and control groups in a 1:1 ratio. The control kindergartens will continue their usual curriculum of ∼2.5 h PA/week, whereas preschoolers in the intervention kindergartens will engage in an additional 75-min game-based PA class twice per week (extra 2.5 h PA/week) over the preschool year. This multi-component intervention will also target parents, teachers, and the kindergarten environment to further encourage PA in preschoolers and their families. Objectively measured PA, cardiorespiratory fitness and other physical fitness components (muscle strength and power, agility, balance, flexibility, body composition), and psychological health will be examined at the start (0 month) and end (10 months) of the preschool year. This study examines 'Faux Comprehension' and 'Pseudo-Understanding' among middle leaders and teachers in curriculum development, where apparent agreement masks deeper misalignments. Through a comparative case study and theoretical lens of action-driven sensemaking, the study analyzes four Hong Kong schools using questionnaires, interviews, and observations. Findings reveal: Faux Comprehension, where teachers superficially comply with leaders' directives, and Pseudo-Understanding, where misaligned goals are concealed by overconfidence. Both reflect overbearing leadership and cognitive biases. The study enriches sensemaking literature by incorporating compliance and cognitive bias perspectives, while recommending clearer guidelines and communication strategies to align educational practices with reform goals and enhance engagement. Hong Kong’s self-financed taught postgraduate (TPg) programmes have experienced significant growth, primarily driven by mainland Chinese students. The marketisation orientation of these programmes may gradually change these students’ self-identification of seeing themselves as ‘customers’ or ‘students’. This study aims to explore how mainland Chinese students perceive their identities based on their learning experiences in these self-financed TPg programmes. Using a mixed-methods approach, this study collected 303 responses, and 17 of them joined the follow-up semi-structured interviews. The findings suggest that mainland Chinese students are generally satisfied with the self-financed TPg programmes in Hong Kong for their cost-effectiveness compared to similar degrees from Western universities and for receiving internationally competitive higher degrees. In their studies, most mainland students view themselves primarily as students pursuing qualifications for career development, but some have transitioned to seeing themselves as customers due to unsatisfactory experiences and influences from teachers and peers. The study aims to contribute to understanding mainland Chinese students’ learning experiences when studying abroad and provide practical insights for self-financed TPg programme providers in Hong Kong to enhance the programme quality. This study investigates the differences in pragmatic competence between Hong Kong and Chinese mainland university students. Participants included 19 native speakers of English, 115 Chinese mainland students, divided into those who had spent time abroad in an English-speaking country (CM A) and those who had not (CM NA), and 97 Hong Kong students, divided into those from an English-medium secondary school (Hong Kong EMI) and those from a Chinese-medium school (Hong Kong CMI). Linguistic proficiency was measured by a C-test, and pragmatic competence by a Metapragmatic Knowledge Test, an Irony Test and a Monologic Role Play. Group scores were compared using ANCOVAs to control for differences in proficiency. The results point to a continuum of pragmatic competence-EMI > CMI > CM A > CM NA-reflecting the groups' access to English in real-life contexts. The differences between the Hong Kong groups and the Chinese mainland groups were clearest in those tests measuring processing capacity (i. e., Irony Response Time and the Monologic Role Play). CM A, but not CM NA, performed as well as the Hong Kong groups on measures of metapragmatic awareness. This study examines shadow education research in Asia using bibliometric indicators and Scopus data. It uncovers this field's leading scholars, scientific origins, and progression through various analyses, including cocitation, bibliographic coupling, co-authorship, and co-occurrence. H-classics publications are also reviewed to highlight impactful contributions. Mark Bray was identified as a key figure, and China, Hong Kong, and South Korea emerged as leading contributors, forming collaborative networks. Network analysis reveals thematic clusters aligning with diverse dimensions of shadow education, including economic, sociological, political, linguistic, and psychological aspects. The main themes in the corpus include the tangible benefits of private supplementary tutoring (PT) in achieving high scores during critical educational transitions, the impact of PT on the dynamics of mainstream schooling as demonstrated by the behaviour of some tutees and teachers, and the role of PT in exacerbating educational and social inequalities in Asia. Concerns about corruption in tutoring practices are also noted. This study depicts the multifaceted nature of shadow education, emphasising the importance of considering the soft benefits of PT and enhancing the quality of teaching in mainstream schooling, as well as implementing effective PT regulatory measures. Purpose This article takes a postfoundational lens to reflect upon my ethnographic (re)searching experience in a Hong Kong high school biology classroom to expose ignorant theoretical-methodological assumptions of researchers and teachers on critical thinking for new realizations.Design/Approach/Methods Using an encountered embodied thinking moment as a trigger, this article examines the texts/discourses collected from teachers/teaching and students/learning to unpack underlying philosophical-theoretical-methodological traps and ignorance.Findings The analysis exposes three ignorant assumptions. First is a mind-body dualism that has historically disembodied thinking as an abstract and invisible mind/cognitive activity. Second is a knowledge-skill/thinking divide that upgrades critical thinking as a transferrable higher-order skill above and external to knowledge. Third is a naturalized assumption that didactic instructions in Asian classrooms are not as conducive to thinking cultivation as (Western) student-centered pedagogies.Originality/Value My postfoundational reflections interrogate and expand these philosophical-theoretical-methodological grounds to reconstruct effective thinking curricula and classrooms. Emotions have received widespread attention in the education field globally thanks to the greater emphasis on well-being in recent times. Against this backdrop and the fact that foreign language (FL) education is increasingly common from a young age, this study set out to investigate what FL classroom activities children find most enjoyable and most boring, and why. Ninety-eight Grade-5 English-as-a-FL learners in Hong Kong participated in this study. The participants put forward 18 activities that they thought were most enjoyable, especially games and videos (together making up about 49% of the responses) . Fifteen activities were deemed most boring, especially writing and dictation (together 45% of the responses). Fun , knowledge-gaining , and opportunities for interaction were among the most common reasons given for activities being enjoyable, while difficult , troublesome , and tiring were the main descriptors of the activities they thought were boring. Word reading fluency is crucial for early L2 development. Moreover, the practice of digital reading has become increasingly common for both children and adults. Therefore, the current study investigated factors that explain digital word reading fluency in English (L2) among Chinese children from Hong Kong. Eighty-six children (age: M = 9.78, SD = 1.42) participated in a digital silent word reading test using a mobile phone, a computer, or a tablet. This is a 10-minute timed test of English word reading. Overall, children’s digital word reading fluency was highly correlated with print word reading fluency, even when measured a year apart. A hierarchical regression model revealed that socio-economic status ( β = .333), grade ( β = .455), and English reading motivation ( β = .375) were positively and uniquely associated with performance in digital reading. These predictors explained 48.6% of the total variance in task performance. Two additional variables, i.e., the type of reading device and extraneous cognitive load, were included as well. Digital word reading fluency was significantly poorer when done using a phone as compared to a computer ( β = -.187). No significant difference was found between reading on a tablet and a computer. Extraneous cognitive load ( β = -.255) negatively and uniquely explained digital word reading fluency as well. Overall, the model explained 58.8% of the total variance.
