Teaching young Hongkongers a sense of ‘Chineseness’, especially in a cultural sense, was embedded in the city’s colonial history. Yet moulding the young generation to be patriotic citizens of the People’s Republic of China was a new objective for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government after 1 July 1997. This study analyses civic and citizenship curriculum guidelines issued in Hong Kong from 1997 to 2022 to explore how a new construct of national identity was pedagogized in the post-handover context. The research findings of this study suggest that the pedagogical discourse of national identity in the curriculum guidelines has tended to prioritize an ethno-cultural sense of Chineseness as an external entity and orient Hong Kong students as passive recipients for this new identity after the handover. The article concludes by considering the implications of these findings for the teaching of national identity in Hong Kong’s new political context after the implementation of the National Security Law in 2020. Traditional sending countries of international students in East Asia have emerged as increasingly desirable higher education destinations. Yet little is known about the experiences of international students in East Asia as most research focuses on those in the Anglophone West. In this study, we explored the trajectory and interactions between intercultural communication, acculturation strategies, and adaptation outcomes of international students in Hong Kong. We conducted in-depth interviews with international students from other Asian countries (n = 14) and Western countries (n = 10). Our research reveals a paradox where international students’ eagerness to engage with diverse peers is overshadowed by limited interaction with local students. Cultural and language differences were perceived to create a wall separating them from the local students, inhibiting a cosmopolitan learning environment. Additionally, international students often gravitate towards familiar national or cultural groups, which can hinder broader integration. Sociocultural challenges and outsider feelings were also reported, potentially leading to psychological issues. We propose an interactive framework that connects intercultural communication, acculturation strategies, and adaptation outcomes. The paper offers theoretical and practical insights for policymakers, administrators, educators, and students, aiming to foster effective communication and successful acculturation in a multilingual and multicultural educational setting. This study explored the effect of a social emotional learning programme- the ECE-Peace Ambassador Project (ECE-PAP) − on children's (i) emotional intelligence, (ii) prosocial behaviour, (iii) aggressive behaviour with peers, (iv) and peer exclusion. Employing a quasi-experimental design, ECE-PAP was implemented in 16 schools in Hong Kong. In each school, teachers in one K3 class (4- to 5-year-olds) implemented the programme and a second K3 class served as a control (N=302). Multiple reporters (children, parents, and teachers) provided assessments of children's emotional competence, social behaviour, aggressive behaviour, and responses to peer aggression the week before the programme, the week after, and three months later. Preliminary analyses showed that at pretest, children in the experimental condition showed lower emotional intelligence and less competent responses to peer aggression than controls. However, these differences disappeared by posttest and remained non-significant at follow-up. Children in the experimental condition showed increases from pre- to posttest in emotional intelligence, emotion labelling, and taking action to stop bullying, and decreases in avoidance and aggressive responses. Implementing the programme over a greater number of weeks was associated with more positive child outcomes. These results suggest that ECE-PAP may be an effective, cost-effective way to address aggressive behaviour in kindergarten classrooms by promoting children's emotional intelligence and social skills. Purpose: This study addresses a gap in the knowledge on how longitudinal engagement in a school improvement initiative influences change in middle leaders’ (MLs') interactions and assesses how school–university partnerships around school improvement can support teachers with formal leadership roles (i.e. MLs’) leadership development. Design/methodology/approach: Using a two-year longitudinal research design, university staff facilitated middle leadership training in a school-defined improvement initiative on lesson study. Results from a pre-test followed by two post-tests administered at one-year intervals were collected on social networks. Analyses examined changes in indegree and brokerage patterns among groupings of senior leaders (SL), subject leaders, cross-school specialists and teachers. Findings: Accounting for staffing changes, 27 of 67 staff members participated in each survey, yielding 1,623 distinct ties connecting school members. Over the first year, advice-seeking increased by 225%. SLs’ initial propensity to consult peers shifted towards MLs and teachers. Subject leaders advising other leaders and teachers increased tenfold. Teachers’ peer-to-peer consultation increased by 2,000%. Specialists with school-wide responsibilities became the dominant group for advising other leaders, such as SLs and subject leaders. These shifts were sustained over the second year. Originality/value: The study demonstrates that engagement in the school–university partnership support and the corresponding structural changes stimulated robust cross-school dialogue among teachers and various leaders. Brokerage patterns indicated an enhanced role for MLs in driving the school-defined improvement initiative which corresponded to university-designed development activities. Over the past decade, numerous studies and technologies have emerged exploring how to provide the most appropriate interventions to help students with special educational needs (SEN), who need assistance due to cognitive or developmental disabilities, to learn and achieve higher added value in school. In this work, we focus on data analysis to scrutinize the learning behavior and intervention effectiveness associated with the different types of SEN students. Specifically, we investigated the learning behaviors of students with special educational needs in terms of extracurricular activities (ECA) participation and prosocial behavior, based on data collected from a Hong Kong secondary school. We found that different types of disorders are associated with distinct learning behaviors. Moreover, the effectiveness of interventions varied across students with different disorders, indicating the need for individualized strategies in supporting these students. According to the statistics provided by the Office of the Communications Authority of the government of Hong Kong SAR, mobile subscriber penetration rate in Hong Kong is 286.6% (2021). This figure indicates that mobile devices have become ubiquitous as Hong Kong people are increasingly using them to surf the Internet. Although smartphones and tablets, the two most popular categories of mobile devices, provide prevailing features for users in this information age, they also become prevailing targets for collecting users’ personal data. As higher education institution (HEI) students are usually active users of mobile devices for surfing the Internet, visiting social networking platforms, using instant messaging applications (hereinafter ‘apps’) and making online purchases, this research, as an exploratory study, investigated their online privacy concerns.This study aims at providing background information and insight for educators to enhance existing privacy education and also for policymakers in developing privacy policy in tertiary level and thus elevate students’ concerns on protecting their online personal data privacy while using mobile devices.Communication privacy management theory developed by Petronio (2002, 2013) was employed in this study to design the teaching materials including teaching notes and student assignments. Design-based research (DBR) approach with convergent mixed method design was adopted in this study as the mixed methods approach is able to maximise the validity and increases the objectivity and reliability of the current research. In addition, most DBR literature agree that the mixed methods approach is proper for collecting and analysing data (Alghamdi & Li, 2013; Bell, 2004; Design-Based Research Collective, 2003; Wang & Hannafin, 2005). Therefore, in DBR methodology, qualitative and quantitative research methods were adopted to address the research questions (Bogdan & Biklen, 2006; Li & Chu, 2018; MacDonald, 2008). This study investigated the perceptions of second language (L2) English learners from Hong Kong on the speech produced by third language (L3) English learners from the Greater Bay Area (GBA) of China. Twenty L2 learners from a local university were asked to listen to speech recordings from two L3 learners, and then complete an online survey, which focused on comprehension of the speech and four dimensions of language attitudes, namely Appropriateness, Solidarity, Status, and Dynamism. Results showed correlations between the phonological performance of learners and the perception of listeners. Specifically, vowel replacement and addition, as well as consonant addition were found to have a negative correlation with the learners’ actual comprehensibility. Replacing /ə/ with Chinese ‘er’ /ɚ/ only affected their perceived comprehensibility. For perceived attitude, the presence of vowel replacement and addition had an adverse effect on the rating of Dynamism. These two features, along with consonant addition, also negatively affected the rating of Status. Moreover, consonant addition was the sole factor that negatively affected the rating of Solidarity. These findings provided pedagogical insights for learners to communicate in English as well as social implications for language paradigm, particularly in a multilingual and multicultural context such as the GBA. Copyright © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
