There has been a worldwide interdisciplinary curriculum development. By examining several official interdisciplinary curriculum in Hong Kong, this paper argues that curriculum integration which incorporates learning about globalization and global citizenship has gradually developed since the late 1990s. By using cross-sectional focus group interviews with experienced teachers and a sample of students, the author identified benefits such as enhancing students' interdisciplinary knowledge and applying critical thinking. But limitations can be found in having a weak disciplinary knowledge and difficult to develop transferrable skills, which necessitates teacher training. This paper was inspired by three important concerns in higher education, namely, changes in higher education curricula (Bourner, 2004), concept of a fully functioning university (Bourner, 2008), and nature of education, such a university offers (Bourner, Heath, & Rospigliosi, 2013). To prepare university graduates for the unpredictable changes and diversified needs of a fast-growing world, the authors explore the use of narrative knowing in designing a student-centered curriculum. Developing generic skills is a core component of the current educational reforms in Asia in response to global demands to shift towards a knowledge-based economy in the last two decades. The study adopted a mixed approach by using a survey and interviews to find out the views of a group of students and teachers about the effects of the school curriculum on developing students' self-management and leadership skills. The findings show that learning self-management and leadership skills has been infused in the school curriculum, and is not exclusive to a particular curriculum area in Hong Kong schools.

Teachers have had to face a number of difficulties when school-based assessment (SBA) was introduced for most subjects of the New Secondary School curriculum in Hong Kong from 2009. This paper draws on data from a project that supports the implementation of rubrics in inquiry learning for the subject of Liberal Studies. It aims at studying the way the use of rubrics enables teachers to address the challenges of SBA and at identifying useful strategies to address these challenges. The project invited ten secondary schools in which thirty-six teachers and more than 400 students were involved. Data were collected from teachers, students and classroom observations. The paper formulates four strategies by which rubrics are used to enhance the implementation of SBA, namely increasing the validity of assessment, diagnosing students’ learning needs, providing a supportive and non-competitive assessment environment, and enabling students to develop a personal learning path.

Since the start of the new century, basic and senior schools have started to encounter curriculum reforms, and vocational education has experienced substantial changes. Based on the changing context in the past 10 or more years, this study examines the issue of school-to-work transition from the perspective of the vocationalization of secondary education in Hong Kong. In addition to providing the results of different studies, three approaches are proposed. These approaches include enhancement of generic competencies through technology, introduction of lost-cost programs in less gender-specific areas, such as business studies, and emphasis on entrepreneurship education.

This study was designed to investigate the theory and practice of curriculum leadership within the tradition of school-based curriculum development. A case study methodology was used to evaluate the extent to which teacher engagement in curriculum decision making processes within a school-based structure of curriculum development had led to professional development. Evidence revealed positively that participating teachers had developed professionally through the process of planning, implementing and reflecting curriculum practice and innovation. However, the complexity of the structures and processes that were established for the implementation of the concept of teacher curriculum leadership needs further empirical and theoretical work. This article reports on the activities and preliminary findings in the first action cycle of the project, which focused on developing teacher leadership in curriculum theory and practice in the period September to December 2004.
