Research shows that kindergarten teachers require support to enhance the way they teach music to children. However, little is known about the professional development (PD) needs of teachers with different profiles. Drawing on survey data from 1,019 Hong Kong kindergarten teachers, we compared the music-specific PD needs of beginning, experienced, and advanced teachers focusing on PD content, facilitators, formats, and activities. Participants demanded PD: (1) centered on how to foster children’s musical creativity via theme-based activities; (2) facilitated by experts in pedagogy and music performance, (3) conducted as workshops and mentoring sessions; and (4) focused on observation, skill acquisition, and practice. Significant differences were found across groups, which indicates that teaching experience must be carefully considered when designing responsive PD. Copyright © 2022 AERA.

Hong Kong’s education research communities have attracted leading education scholars from all over the world and have served as a global and regional hub in education research. Simultaneously, the expected role of education research in the development of education policies and practices in Hong Kong and China is evolving into a crucial matter. This paper details the history, current conditions, and future perspectives of Hong Kong’s education research communities from local, national, regional, and global standpoints. Social support is a feature of instructional behaviour, it is an engaged behaviour of enthusiastic teachers. As an altruistic behaviour, teachers’ social support to students has been regarded as a factor that impact teachers’ well-being, however, this factor has yet to explore. The present study attempts to fill such research gap. The paper first reports a survey study based on 309 Hong Kong teachers. The path analysis results showed that Psychological Need Satisfaction at Work (BPNW) significantly predicts the three indicators of well-being, i.e. Psychological Meaningfulness, Health and Work Engagement. The predictive patterns of BPNW on well-being are mostly consistent. The results also suggested that the mediating effects of social support between BPNW and well-being indicators are small. Given the positive correlations with both BPNW and well-being indicators, social support can be regarded as an instructional behaviour that would benefit teacher development. The second part of the paper reports interviews of a sample of 15 teachers. Content analysis suggests that teachers’ source of satisfaction has largely derived from engaging with students, such as in assisting students’ growth, or developing good teacher-student relationships; teacher satisfaction derives from higher-order value of a job (i.e. serving students) that causes psychological meaningfulness and commitment. Implications to the development of enhancement programs promoting BPNW to boost teachers’ wellbeing and engaging teaching behaviour will be discussed. The study highlights eudemonia satisfaction as the core of well-being, for teachers, social support behaviour may be significant indicator of work engagement. Childcare centers are increasingly recognized as education agents, and school-based parent activities are part of home-school partnerships. Based on a survey of 265 parents, this study examined: (1) What made school-based parent activities useful? (2) What factors facilitated or inhibited parents’ participation? (3) What topics interested parents the most? Results showed that both structured activities (e.g., training workshops) and unstructured activities (e.g., parent-child tours) could meet parents’ needs. Parents were more likely to participate in activities that they perceived useful and allowed them to cope with the restrictions imposed by their work and family demands. Parents were most interested in activities that taught them how to deal with their children’s emotions. Finally, parents’ interests and participation varied by demographics. Copyright © 2022 AERA.

In Hong Kong, improving STEM education has become timely since the government launched policy initiatives in 2016, which substantially impacted STEM education practices. Teacher education is of special importance in constructing the aspirations of pre-service teachers and offering professional training for a more gender equitable future in the era of STEM. Professional teachers are believed to be crucial for inspiring future students to use science and innovative technology with global and ethical awareness and for building student aspirations for STEM-related occupations and professions.This paper reports on a study that used educational ethnography methods to examine the life stories (as cross-case studies) of eight pre-service, women teachers majoring in STEM-related programs at the largest teacher training university in Hong Kong. We applied a conceptual framework that explains the socio-cultural construction of STEM teacher identity. The iterative processes of thematic coding discovered 4 themes from the qualitative data of educational autobiography and follow-up interviews. They are (1) motivations for aspiring to become STEM teachers, (2) gender stereotyping and STEM performance, (3) gender and aspirations for teaching STEM, and (4) gender and STEM teacher identity.Empirical findings of this study show that although gender inequalities within STEM education and the local education system are not readily apparent, gender stereotyping in STEM fields still exists in the society and schools of Hong Kong. Despite the availability of opportunities and resources for STEM education and teacher training, students in Hong Kong still hold subjectivities about gender disparities in science performance. Such gender biased perceptions of Hong Kong women students affect their everyday interactions and personal observations about gender differences and inequality. This study aims to explore how East Asian flagship universities develop understanding of academic entrepreneurialism, reconsider forms of scholarship and transform the strategic planning of university missions. This study collected data from government and institutional documents related to academic entrepreneurialism and “scholarship of engagement” of University of Hong Kong (HKU) and Seoul National University (SNU) during 2011-2020. This study applied the Critical Discourse Analysis, which explores the relationship between academic entrepreneurial discourse and social structures as dialectic. We found that HKU and SNU present a hybrid image while they are reconsidering the scope and forms of scholarship. Portraying themselves as public institutions, the two East Asian flagship universities emphasize community engagement and social contribution in their pursuit of academic entrepreneurialism. The COVID-19 pandemic measures substantially affected the Hong Kong education systems over two years. The learning and teaching of Biology in local secondary schools have been greatly hindered by the occasional suspension of face-to-face teaching in Hong Kong. The school-based assessment (SBA) of the major public examination, Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE), have been even canceled for the past years. To respond to the constraints imposed by COVID-19, there was an accelerated popularization of electronic learning (e-learning) in the educational sector. Other than conducting online real-time lectures, some new educational modules unitizing Virtual Reality (VR) have been developed by educational organizations to substitute the authentic learning in the field trip. The presentation would report a case study of such a VR-based module which has been tested in the tertiary institution for training the pre-service Biology teachers. The students agreed in the survey that the learning experience through VR-based module is not comparable to authentic field experience, and yet it could be a contingent measure in responding to the COVID-19 situation and a potential resource for self-directed learning in the future. Despite its continuing rise, homeschooling in Hong Kong and many other Chinese cities is under-studied in academic research, underrepresented in society, invisible in public policy, and even marginalized within parent communities. Unlike many cases in Western societies, homeschooling in Hong Kong appears to be largely a ‘middle-class phenomenon’—better-off Chinese parents in Hong Kong can draw on their resources and navigate opportunities in the existing legal framework so that homeschooling is a viable option for their children’s education. Putting this phenomenon into a wider context of stratification and inequality, alternative middle-class choice and practice that ‘opt out’ of a traditional school system to homeschool their children problematizes our common sense understanding of middle-class trajectories. For instance, would these middle-class parents fear any loss of educational privilege that they would otherwise have in a traditional school system? Or, conversely, would these parents think that homeschooling is ideally suited for their children, who, in turn, may gain even more ‘home advantage’ over their schooled peers? Or would these parents pursue alternative forms of aspiration and privilege for their children? With these questions in mind, this study explores how Chinese homeschooling parents perceive and make sense of their homeschooling choice, with emphasis on the relation to social class. Data were drawn from in-depth interviews with 15 homeschooling families in Hong Kong. We will discuss the preliminary findings of this study and the theoretical implications for how Chinese homeschooling phenomenon constitutes the analytical leverage for theorizing a relatively unexplored area of middle-class reproduction processes.
