Teacher feedback has been acknowledged as an important facilitator for students’ learning performance. However, teachers’ feedback efforts are not always found to pay off, especially in the context of Confucian-heritage countries. Scholars are seeking answers from student agencies during feedback-taking. The current study aimed to examine the role of students’ perspective-taking in passing over the effect of teacher feedback on students’ reading test performance. We set the study in Hong Kong, where teacher feedback has often been reported to fail its aims. We used OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018 data generated by 5665 15-year-old students. The results of multilevel structural equation modeling confirmed our hypothesis that perspective-taking significantly mediated the relation between teacher feedback and students’ reading achievement. Our results highlight the benefits of accounting for perspective-taking as a key element of student feedback literacy. Implications for future research and practice are discussed. Aim: It is common for Chinese students to sit quietly during classroom lectures, attentively following teachers’ instructions without interacting or asking questions, viewed as passive engagement. This study aims to understand further the passive engagement of Chinese students in relation to classroom questioning, just-in-time feedback and collaborative activities. With objectives to formulate strategies to enhance Chinese students' engagement in a large class learning environment without undermining the cultural dimension of "face". Background: Engaging in collaborative educational activities between teachers and students can be challenging in a large classroom learning environment. Within the Chinese context, Confucian-heritage culture may further exacerbate the challenges teachers face. Chinese students often appear passive when responding to questions. In this situation, educators may receive insufficient student feedback to modify and optimise their teaching and learning approaches. Design: A qualitative research method, with an interpretative phenomenological approach was employed in a self-financed institute of higher education in Hong Kong. Methods: Eight nursing graduates were invited to participate in two focus group interviews to generate teaching and learning strategies. In addition, individual in-depth interviews were conducted with twelve nursing teachers recruited through a snowballing sampling strategy. The narratives were coded, categorised, themed, analysed and interpreted through thematic analysis. Results: Chinese students are concerned with "losing face" and the fear of being teased by their peers in a collectivist culture. Based on these findings, three teaching and learning strategies for engaging students in classroom questioning and collaborative activities were generated. Prior research on classroom interaction has investigated how the teacher's feedback turn following students' responses can be used to transform students' turns into academic expressions during whole class discussions. Nevertheless, more empirical studies are needed to explore how teachers' translanguaging practices can play a role in shaping students' contributions into pedagogical opportunities for introducing academic terminologies in English-Medium-Instruction (EMI) classrooms. Adopting translanguaging as an analytical perspective, this study explores how an EMI history teacher deploys available linguistic and multimodal resources to connect students' responses with academic concepts and terminologies. The study draws its data from a larger linguistic ethnographic project that took place in an EMI secondary history classroom in Hong Kong. The classroom interaction data is examined using Multimodal Conversation Analysis, and this analysis is further triangulated with video-stimulated-recall-interviews that are analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. This paper argues that the EMI teacher's translanguaging practices facilitate the process of transforming student contributions into academic terminology and concepts. The process of deploying translanguaging for transforming student contributions highlights translanguaging as an important component of the teacher's classroom interactional competence for constructing new configurations of language practices and achieving specific pedagogical purposes. International concerns about the educational equity of ethnic minorities have continued to highlight teachers’ abilities to be culturally responsive. How do teachers manage cultural diversity through their pedagogical practices in the absence of relevant teacher training? The answer to this question is essential as it may help move our understanding of diversity education forward in societies where ethnic diversity is not necessarily the norm. Drawing from observational data in a Hong Kong multiethnic secondary school, this paper explores two teachers’ pedagogies. I interpreted the data using Bernstein’s sociology of pedagogy to identify the nature of the class activities and instructional patterns about teacher control and pacing. These pedagogical practices, I suggest, emerged from power relations that reveal teachers’ efforts in recognising their students’ ethnic diversity while negotiating academic expectations on the students to excel in Hong Kong’s competitive examination system. 隨著特殊教育類別及介入方法的多年發展,有關特殊教育需要的文獻恆河星數,教師很容易迷失在眾多文獻推介的策略,而忽略了在課堂內外,營造正向教學環境的重要性,包括與學生建立有效溝通及良好師生關係。這些返璞歸真建立有效課堂教學的基本要素,在嚴重行為及情緒問題出現時,更能考驗教師及專業團隊的專業操守。核心要素包括:有效溝通、良好師生關係及結構化的課堂規劃,這三個要素在中度智障學校及自閉症譜系障礙學童教學上尤為重要,本文概述香港一所中度智障特殊學校的校本自閉輔導教學計劃,於2014至2016年間開展了「CRS」的教學計劃,「CRS」即代表 : C- 有 效 溝 通 (Communication) 、 R-良好師生關係(Relationship)及S-結構化的課堂規劃(Structure)。計劃主要是針對這三項息息相關的教學原則,利用行政措施及對位的教學策略,進行了對「CRS」的深化探討,並以此作為優化教學的策略,成為學校自閉輔導教學的核心價值。The abundance of researches on intervention methods in special education makes appropriate selection of teaching strategies confirming and sometimes caused the core elements of teaching being ignored. Teachers can get lost easily amongst the universe of research material and methods while forgetting the core education value for creating a positive classroom climate to support students’ learning. These positive support measures include the use of effective communication in building up good teacher-student relationship. These back to the basics of classroom teaching are mastery and effective ways for guiding and testifying good teaching practices especially in the presence of severe behavior and emotional problems. A project named CRS comprising the three core elements of teaching: C - effective communication, R - good student-teacher relationship and S - well-structured classroom activities, was implemented between 2014 and 2016 in a Hong Kong special school for moderate intellectually disabled students. These basic elements are especially vital for the teaching of students with intellectual disability and autistic spectrum disorders. Teaching elements deliberately linked with CRS were set up as administrative guidelines and teaching strategies developed for guiding professional practices to ensure that all school-based autistic teaching programme will be under the scrutiny of these elements. It was found that lessons and activities being planned are more structured and strategically conducted when being applied under the CRS framework.

In this study, the relationship between student affective performance and classroom physical environment, social climate, and management style were investigated in a sample of classes in Hong Kong primary schools. The results of Pearson and canonical correlation analyses indicated that among the measures of classroom environment, perceived quality of physical environment and class master’s expert power, personal power, and coercive power were the strongest predictors of affective performance. This finding supports the importance of class master’s management style in the classroom environment. Students’ attitudes toward school and teachers appeared to be most sensitive to variation in the classroom environment, and self-concept was the least sensitive among the seven student affective measures. Students’ self-efficacy of learning and intention to drop out were moderately sensitive to classroom environment. Profiles of effective and ineffective classroom environments were also mapped. In effective classrooms, class masters care for students, pay attention to teaching, do not use force or punishment but do create a good classroom climate with their professional knowledge, personal morality, and personality. Physical environment and psychological environment are both important; a good classroom environment is highly correlated with student affective performance.

This paper reports on a narrative inquiry of a Hong Kong female undergraduate student's second language (L2) learning experiences in an English-medium university in Hong Kong, with a focus on her participation in classroom oral activities and identity negotiation. Using ideas from situated learning theory and Norton's (2000) notions of identity and investment, the paper analyzes how the student negotiated her classroom participation and identities over the course of her studies in the university. Findings suggest that the student's classroom participation in the English-medium university appeared to be a complex and dynamic process which involved ongoing negotiations of identities, competence and membership in the classroom in response to the challenges she faced. It was found that the student's participation and identity (re)construction in the classroom were mediated by the contextual complexities in specific classroom communities and were contingent upon the agentive choices made by the student in investing in different classroom activities. Findings also indicate that the student's participation evolved over time alongside a changing sense of competence and showed signs of gradual yet non-linear progression from peripheral to full participation in the classroom.

Student engagement is recognised as a key process that can assist students’ learning. This paper reports a study in which three variables were examined to assess their potential in creating engaging and participative classrooms. The focus was on ‘teacher engagement in the community’, ‘teacher engagement in school’ and ‘teachers’ teaching confidence’ and their impact on the way teachers perceive their classrooms. Data was drawn from the International Civics and Citizenship Study, and the views of over 1400 teachers in 90 Hong Kong schools were analysed. The results of the study showed that teacher engagement is an important construct that directly supports teachers’ positive descriptions of their classroom activities. At the same time, teacher engagement also influenced teachers’ confidence in their teaching which in turn influenced the positive descriptions of their usual classroom activities. The theoretical foundations of these results are discussed as well as the implications for teachers’ professional lives, for policymakers concerned with enhancing teacher quality and for school leaders with responsibility for teacher professional development.
