This paper aims to identify the perceptions of the current curriculum innovation in Hong Kong: Target Oriented Curriculum (TOC) by two groups of teachers: the pre-service and in-service teachers. It examines the issues regarding the context, concept and practice of TOC. Focusing on the perceptions of two groups of teachers, it attempts to clarify some issues related to the implementation of TOC and the improvement of teacher education course. When important changes take place in Hong Kong after 1997, a high priority of concern should focus on education.. It is very important that TOC should meet the needs of students and the society.

Band 1 schools have an enviable reputation in Hong Kong and one which can breed false assumptions that somehow Band 1 schools present that fabled-land where teaching somehow is "easy". How do Band 1 schools gain and (more importantly) justifiably sustain their reputations for excellence in education? This paper seeks answers to this question by investigating one case study Band 1 Primary School from the perspective of the teachers who shoulder responsibility for sustaining a track record of "educational excellence". The challenges facing these teachers, their practical solutions and the underpinning educational theories will be examined. This examination includes the perspectives of a school principal, two local and two expatriate experienced classroom teachers and a "visiting" practicing teacher. By triangulating these varied perspectives, this paper seeks to focus attention not only on "Band 1 teaching methods" but, more significantly on the features of effective teaching which may be generalisable across the spectrum of Hong Kong Primary schools.

The internationalisation of higher education in countries such as Australia and the UK has resulted in increased numbers of South-East Asia students in higher education classrooms. While considerable attention has been given to exploring the implications of internationalisation on students in ‘Western’ university contexts, less attention is given to researching the effects on teachers of higher education, and in particular those employed to teach in countries culturally foreign to their own. This aims to initiate such discussion through an exploration of the current results of an ongoing ethnographic study of two teaching academics working in Hong Kong. Issues that will be addressed include language and communication, social and cultural distance and the effect of hierarchy and related teaching strategies developed to meet the inter-cultural learning needs of themselves and their students. The authors argue that the development of inter-cultural understandings must permeate the curricula and be a shared goal and responsibility of both teachers and students.

The Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd) is the main provider of teacher education programmes in Hong Kong; the courses offered range from sub-degree, degree, to post- graduate levels. This study reported on a study which aimed to find out the beliefs about mathematics teaching held by a group of mathematics student teachers taking a Certificate in Education programme. The study made use of the Beliefs About Teaching Mathematics (BTM) Questionnaire developed by Van Zoest et al. (1994). The questionnaire was administered to a group of student teachers enrolled in the Mathematics Teaching Methodology Module of the HKIEdÑof which the author was the lecturer in chargeÑat the start of the semester. The paper will report on the findings and discuss the implications for designing a mathematics methodology course.

On July 1, 1997, the hand-over ceremony ended 155 years' British colonial rule and marked the beginning of resumption of China's sovereignty over Hong Kong. The implementation of the "one country, two systems" began. Did allegiance and sense of belonging of the people of Hong Kong readjust to match the political transfer ? What does the identity of 'citizen under "one country, two systems'" mean to the people of Hong Kong, especially the student teachers珦culptors of the mind of tomorrow ? This paper is the report of a two-year longitudinal study of student teachers' conceptions of citizenship under the "one country, two systems". Two surveys were conducted in the Hong Kong Institute of Education, one in Dec. 1997 and another in Nov. 1998. The samples were the Certificate of Education (secondary) student teachers who had at least one Social Science subject as their elective subjects. The instruments were two more or less identical questionnaires. In this report, comparison between the 1997 and the 1998 surveys was made. It aimed at revealing the evolution of student teachers' conceptions of citizenship after the transfer of sovereignty; agents that helped to shape such conceptions and student teachers' opinions related to Civic Education curriculum development. Implication on the development of Civic Education in Hong Kong was discussed and suggestion made.

A wealth of literature on gender identities undertaken by western research communities shows that gender scripts have real consequences for male and female teachers' identity constructions. Social expectations and stereotyped images of men and women teachers affect teachers' gender identities as well as their professional experiences and opportunities (Biklen, 1995; Casey, 1990; Coffey & Delamont, 2000; Smedley, 2007; Tamboukou, 2000; Wayne & Blye, 2006). There has been growing research efforts into research on Chinese women primary teachers (Chan, 2004; Luk-Fong, 2010). Little published work on Hong Kong Chinese men and women secondary teachers have been found. Understanding teachers' gender identity is important because the way gender dynamics has worked to shape teachers' gender identities in their school days may field results for the students they interact with. Sabbe and Aelterman (2007), in their comprehensive review on gender in teaching, rightly spell out that 'teaching is historically and culturally imbued with multiple discourses and subjectivities of gender' (p. 529). This chapter portrays gender identity construction, negotiation and renegotiation of two Hong Kong Chinese teachers, Shuijing and Baibin, who both have been involved in painstaking struggles with their gender identities but with varied learning backgrounds. Their narratives aim to illuminate understanding of: - How the gender identities of the Hong Kong Chinese male and female teachers were negotiated and renegotiated, their varied institutional experiences, and; - Crucial elements contributing to gender identity negotiations.

本文乃一份探討性的調查，旨在跟進陳培佳 (Chan, 1992) 之研究結果，以1999年度的新教師小組反思討論為素材，嘗試印證陳氏所介定之第一年的學教歷程，並進而描繪香港小學新教師在身一年所面對的衝擊及其等為應付衝擊而施行的對策。
