Between October 2014 and January 2019, 138 university, secondary, and primary students in Hong Kong committed suicide. Studies have revealed an upward trend in this phenomenon. The implementation of life education and life and death education has been suggested as a means for supporting students. In the past, resilience and self-confidence were the main focuses of life education, whereas the importance of life–death-related topics in the exploration of the value and meaning of life was often neglected. Although these topics have been included in some schools’ life education curriculums, few studies have evaluated their effectiveness. Crucial questions for investigation include the following: What school philosophy resulted in the inclusion of life–death-related topics in life education and/or life and death education? What considerations did schools have during implementation and how did it proceed? What were the problems they encountered? How did schools overcome the problems? What would be their future direction?This research involved case studies of 3 secondary schools in Hong Kong which have included life–death-related topics in their life education and/or life and death education curriculums. Through focus interviews, and document reviews, the implementing life–death-related topics in life education and/or life and death education in Hong Kong and three secondary schools was clarified. The difficulties, needs, and attempts to address the problems during the implementation were also explored. The researcher hopes that the current findings provide valuable information regarding the development and implementation of life and death education in Hong Kong and help guide future improvements.This study revealed that the people involved in life education and/or life and death education curriculum development play a crucial role. Research has shown that mindfulness-based interventions are effective in promoting well-being of clinical populations. However, limited research has been conducted to examine the effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions for teachers. Furthermore, existing mindfulness-based interventions have mostly focused on the practical element of mindfulness without giving proper attention to its rich existential context rooted in the Buddhist tradition. This study sought to address this gap by developing and evaluating an existential mindfulness program for teachers (EMPT). The EMPT consists of two components: (1) the practical component, which involves various kinds of guided mindfulness meditation; and (2) the existential component, which involves exploration of existential concerns at a personal level. The program was specifically designed to improve teachers’ mindfulness and well-being and reduce their ill-being. A mixed-methods research design was employed. For the quantitative part, the research questions focused on examining whether EMPT increased mindfulness and well-being and whether it reduced ill-being. For the qualitative part, the research questions focused on examining the participants’ subjective experiences of the EMPT program, as well as their suggestions to improve the program. The study comprised of two groups of participants. The first group were 15 students who were studying various programs at the university (U Group). The second group was composed of ten teachers recruited from a Kindergarten (KG Group). Questionnaires that measure mindfulness, well-being, and illbeing were administered one week prior to the implementation of the EMPT, and the same questionnaires were administered again one week after the intervention. Paired t-tests were used. For the qualitative part, focus group interviews were conducted at the final sessions of each group. With the U Group, quantitative findings showed that EMPT was effective in partially enhancing key dimensions

With the rapid change of the technological world, educators have been urgently required to appropriately integrate various and innovative digital technologies to support the diverse learning needs of students in Hong Kong. The flexible learning spaces offer multiple opportunities for educators to integrate innovative toolkits to explore students’ potential learning needs, embracing their design thinking and creativity. An exploratory case study approach was adopted to investigate improving students’ learning by using digital technologies in the technology-mediated classroom and develop practical toolkits for educators. Students’ discourses and learning processes were collected as data. Three students aged 6-8 in Hong Kong were invited to participate in this study. Content analysis was employed to analyse the effectiveness of the toolkits on students’ learning modal and engagement. The findings show that digital technologies can help change students’ learning modal from passive to interactive by stimulating multimodal learning, i.e. making an AR vocabulary card required modals of linguistic, gestural, visual, and aural. The toolkits can build multiple learning spaces for design thinking and creativity, i.e. a map and digital story of the ocean were created by using a toolkit composed of 3D printing models, coding robots, and a digital book App.隨着科技世界日新月異，需要教育工作者整合各種創新數碼科技，以支持年幼學習者的多元化學習需要。靈活的學習空間為教育工作者提供了多種機會，特別是創新工具包，可以用於探索學生的潛在學習需求，提升他們的設計思維和創造力。此研究採用探索性案例研究方法，在技術為媒介的課堂中使用數碼技術來改善學生學習的方法，並嘗試為教育工作者開發實用工具包。研究通過學生的言談分析和學習歷程收集數據，三名6-8歲的香港學生受邀參與這項研究。研究者使用內容分析法來分析工具包和學習空間對學生學習模式和參與的有效性。研究結果表明，數碼技術可以通過刺激多模態學習來幫助學生將學習模態從被動轉變為交互式，即製作需要語言、手勢、視覺和聽覺模態的 AR 詞彙卡。工具包可以搭建多元化的創意學習空間，研究展示1. 3D打印模型、2. 編程玩具和3. 數字圖書App組成的工具包創建了一個關於海洋的學習空間。 Copyright © 2021 Learning and Teaching Expo.

Online pronunciation teaching becomes particularly challenging because of the distance between teachers and students, and the lack of interactions, feedback and supervision (Dumford & Miller, 2018). The study aims to describe the process of designing an e-teaching package on English phonetics and pronunciation course for pre-service teachers in Hong Kong, and to evaluate the effectiveness of this online teaching package. Thirty-nine pre-service teachers divided into the control group (CG) and experimental group (EG) attended five training sessions on Zoom, an online conference platform. Participants in the CG received traditional Powerpoint lectures with pre-set Zoom functions for interaction, while participants in the EG received training with an e-package of Edpuzzle, Nearpod, Padlet, Mentimeter and Kahoot. Pretest–posttest designs and questionnaire were employed to evaluate students’ pronunciation improvement and their attitudes towards the e-package. Results showed that participants from both groups made fewer errors on English consonants and vowels after the training sessions. 80% of the participants in the EG agreed that the e-package was well-designed and could make the online instruction more interactive compared with the traditional online instruction. 75% of them reported that they received more feedback when the e-package was applied. 45% of the participants reported that their favorite e-tool was Edpuzzle. This tool not only helped them review and consolidate the content knowledge but provided more input for them to identify their pronunciation errors. As for two online quizzes, students showed more interest in Kahoot as it was more competitive compared with the individualized quiz using Nearpod. Career and Life Development (CLD) (or ‘Career Development and Life Planning’) refers to a big spectrum of educational practices that aims to help young people embraces a holistic and comprehensive process to plan one’s life and actively implements the goals determined in own social context (Leung, 2005). It usually comprises of three aspects of education: (1) self-understanding, (2) knowing the dynamic world of work, and (3) nurturing reflective habits of mind about own future career pathways or personal planning. The aim of this study is to analyze school-based CLD effectiveness in Hong Kong by adopting a school improvement instrument, ‘the Hong Kong Benchmarks for Career and Life Development’ (HKBM) which is initiated by CLAP@JC, with close reference to the world-recognized framework in the United Kingdom, the Gatsby’s Benchmarks for Career Guidance (Holman, 2014; Holman & Yip, 2020). Using HKBM, whole school self-evaluation was conducted by CLD leaders in each school under support from teams of ‘critical friends’ (Swaffield & Macbeath, 2005). After examining the HKBM dataset collected from 44 secondary schools, key findings are: (a) effective CLD provision requires a visible and stable policy with strong school leaders’ backing; (b) schools are offering insufficient opportunities of career-related experiences and one-to-one personal guidance on CLD, despite the backing from government policy since 2014. Students are now living in a world that is both rapidly changing and complex. This study aims to examine the effects of school subjects and the classroom climate they create on 15-year-old students’ global competence. A multilevel analysis was conducted on a representative sample of 5,873 Hong Kong participants in PISA 2018. The results showed that student perception of a better classroom disciplinary climate contributes to their global competence directly (.07) and indirectly via their skills in mathematics (.03), science (.03), and reading (.07) at the student level, and indirectly via their skill in reading (.38) at the school level. In addition, about one-third (.32) of the variance of global competence was explained at the school level. These findings suggest that schools play an essential role in cultivating students’ global competence, via traditional learning in core subjects such as mathematics, science, and reading, and a good learning environment. Children’s social-emotional learning (SEL) lays the groundwork for their later adjustment (Durlak et al., 2011). Although numerous SEL programs have been developed for children, few measures have been constructed to assess social-emotional competencies, namely self-awareness, social awareness, self-management, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making (CASEL, 2013). This study validated the 40-item Washoe County School District-Social-Emotional Competency Assessment (WCSD-SECA; Crowder et al., 2019) for use in Hong Kong. The sample consisted of 369 Chinese children (8-13 years old) and their parents. Children completed WCSD-SECA and International Positive and Negative Affect Schedule-Short Form (Thompson, 2007). Parents completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (Goodman et al, 1997). Confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the original 8-factor model fit well to the data, χ2(698)=1116.16, p>.001, CFI=.91, TLI=.90, RMSEA=0.04. WCSD-SECA was associated with emotions and behavioral problems, ps<.05, thereby demonstrating concurrent and predictive validity. Social-emotional learning (SEL) in early childhood lays the foundation for children’s later adjustment (Bornstein et al., 2010). Among existing SEL programs, OpenMind (OM) is a mindfulness-based kindergarten curriculum that has demonstrated effectiveness in the United States and Korea (Jackman et al., 2019; Kim et al., 2020). To enhance children’s SEL in Hong Kong, this study adapted and implemented OM activities over a one-month period. Initial efficacy on children’s SEL was examined, alongside teachers’ attitudes toward OM. Fifty-two Chinese children in K1-2 (3-5-year-old; nintervention=27; nwaitlist control=24) and four trained kindergarten teachers participated in daily meditation practices. They also completed pretest, immediate posttest, and a four-week follow-up posttest. Results suggest that teachers find OM activities useful, particularly during disruptive incidents. Children also had greater improvements in emotional control and shifting than did children in the waitlist control group. Teaching has often been discussed as skills hence teacher education is focused on promoting a certain set of competencies. The changing view of education has turned researchers to study the internal factor of teachers to account for teaching behavior that benefits learners. The current study is underpinned by self-determination theory (Ryan & Deci, 2000). It aims to identify work engagement as a significant factor that affect teachers to adopt teaching behavior that effectively supports learners, it also explores teachers social support behavior. It is a mixed method study including an investigation based on psychological measurement and a qualitative study based on interview. The paper first reports a survey study which is based on 309 Hong Kong junior secondary school teachers. The path analysis results showed that Work Engagement fully mediates the impact of Autonomy and Competence, as two factors of Psychological Need Satisfaction at Work, on teachers' Social Support giving. It then reports an interview study on twenty teachers as the second part study. The content analysis results suggest that social support is featured by teachers' use of questioning, dialogical feedback, authentic interaction, and metacogntive teaching in the classroom. Enabling learners to pursue a good life are identified as a common goal of teaching. The study provides a theoretical framework to explain teachers' engagement behavior. It contributes an important perspective that effective teaching and teaching competencies should be generated internally, suggesting that basic need satisfaction should be promoted as it support teacher development and student learning positively. Based on self-determination theory (SDT), this study examines the relationships of Basic Psychological Need (autonomy, competence, and relatedness) at Work (BPNW), Social Support Giving (SS), and Well-being measured by Psychological Meaningfulness, Health and Work Engagement. It addresses human beings’ integration in social environment, highlighting eudemonia satisfaction as the core of well-being. Results based on a survey on 309 Hong Kong teachers revealed that BPNW significantly predicts all the well-being indicators, the predictive patterns are mostly consistent with SDT. The results also inform that BPNW (competence and relatedness) predicts SS, and SS significantly predicts well-being. The study suggests the influential role of BPNW on teachers’ well-being, it endorses social support as an important instructional behaviour that would benefit teacher development. Implications to the development of SDT and enhancement programs promoting BPNW to boost teachers’ wellbeing will be discussed.
