This paper reports on a study which investigates the implementation of a synchronous e-learning system (Interwise) for online tutorials on an information technology related course offered by the Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK). It examines a set of interview data related to students' and tutors' views on the use of the system. Issues concerning students' participation in online tutorials, opportunities for interaction in using the system, and tutors' roles in real-time conferences are discussed. The findings suggest that both the students and tutors are positive about the use of Interwise for online tutorials in general. Some students, however, indicate dissatisfaction with the one-way communication and teacher-control functionalities of the system. The results also indicate that the tutors are concerned about the workload involved in using Interwise in terms of managing the functionalities of the system and the different learning tasks. Implications are then drawn for supporting synchronous online learning both in the OUHK and a wider academic context.

The growing popularity of e-learning may pose one of the greatest challenges currently facing traditional educational institutions. The questions often asked are how, rather than whether, to embrace this new form of instructional delivery and how to create an appropriate learning environment for the learners. Educational institutions in Hong Kong have the option of adopting programmes or learning materials developed in other parts of the world for local learners, or not. Such an approach of acquiring learning materials is not without risks in terms of the suitability of materials embedded with cultural contents 'foreign' to local learners, or in terms of the suitability of assumptions in the communication context. What are the issues involved in the globalization of education through e-learning? This paper explores - from a critical-dialectical perspective - the implications of globalization on educational policy through cross-border delivery of educational programmes by e-learning, with particular attention given to the threat of cultural imperialism. The paper concludes that Hong Kong seems to be coping with 'cultural imperialism' rather well because of its unique history of being a cross-road for East and West, and also with some recommendations to e-learning providers to mitigate the potential damage of cross-cultural delivery of e-learning.

This paper is a narrative about the use of narrative as a means to understand how the use of technology assisted the educational community of Hong Kong during the SARS crisis of 2003. It is not a carefully planned conventional research study. It is based on seven narratives written by staff at The Chinese University of Hong Kong about their experiences during SARS. The experience of an online conference run by the author has also been considered. Overall, in our context, technology was able to come naturally and appropriately to the fore in our time of crisis. For me, it is a message that technology is now a mainstream tool that can be rapidly mobilized and that is very satisfying indeed.

Over 300 Foreign (non Hong Kong) universities deliver undergraduate degree programs in Hong Kong either on campus in that city or via distance education (or both). Although this topic has been studied from a variety of perspectives, the issue of why Hong Kong students might switch from one locally provided foreign university program to another has not been researched despite evidence of it being common. The current research found that students switched to another university if it offered a wider range of course delivery modes, if they could fast track their degree and if they were failing at the existing university. Increasingly, to be successful in competitive markets such as Hong Kong, foreign universities need to deliver their programs in a wide variety of modes, provide high levels of administrative and academic support, and ensure that they assist their students as much as possible. If they do not, students are likely to move to another provider. These findings have complex and far-reaching delivery ramifications for foreign universities wishing to survive in competitive markets such as Hong Kong--and elsewhere--where there is a high degree of competition amongst universities and a stressed economic situation which could force students to adopt quite ruthless consumer behaviour in regards to their university provider.

This study examined the ways in which new students attempt to adjust to part-time study. Data were gathered through interviews with 53 students enrolled in part-time courses in Hong Kong. It was found that the data could be interpreted in terms of the construct of self- direction. The novice students showed a surprising degree of determination towards personal autonomy. When it came to self- management in learning, those least equipped for self-management were the ones tending to show the greatest difficulties in part-time study. Some students were able to find help from teaching staff, fellow students or friends in developing self-direction. It would appear, though, that universities could do more to help students develop self- managed learning capabilities, and if they did so would ease the transition towards becoming a successful part-time student.

This study examines the relationship between achievement goals and some important learning-related variables in the completion of a course assignment. The research on achievement goals is reviewed and two contentious issues—the nature of performance goals and the effects of multiple goals—are highlighted. Three hundred and seventy-three Chinese distance learners in Hong Kong participated in a mailed survey. A correlation analysis revealed that their mastery goals were adaptive to learning; but, in contrast, work-avoidance goals were maladaptive to the processes of completing an assignment. A mixed pattern of association was found with performance-approach goals. Using a median-split technique, the participants were classified into four different groups of 'multiple-goal learners'. MANOVA tests showed that mastery-focused learners had the most adaptive pattern of learning and engagement in completing the assignment, followed in order by balanced-goal learners, performance-focused learners and performance-anxious learners. The results are discussed in light of achievement goal research conducted using campus-based students.

Fostering field independence among learners is important for the individuals themselves and for the profession for which they are preparing. The manner in which the collaborative distance-education Bachelor of Health Science (Nursing) program influenced the field dependence/field independence of students was investigated. The target population was Hong Kong Chinese registered nurses who studied in an undergraduate distance-learning nursing program. Cognitive style was measured by the Group Embedded Figures Test; data were collected from 246 students from 2 cohorts enrolled in the Bachelor of Health Sciences (Nursing) program. The nursing students became more field independent during their study in the distance-education undergraduate nursing program, apparently as a result of the self-directed learning environment of the distance-education program.
