An interview with David W. Chan, founding director of Program for the Gifted and Talented at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, is presented. Chan states that he started at the field of gifted education when he proposed for a summer gifted program at the school. He says that the topic perfectionism was his favorite topics of all his research because the trait is the fundamental characteristic of giftedness. He adds that young scholars must think on the importance of curiosity.

This study investigated the identification and distribution of perfectionist types with a sample of 111 academically gifted Chinese students aged 17 to 20 in Hong Kong. Three approaches to classification were employed. Apart from the direct questioning approach, the rational approach and the clustering approach classified students using their scores on three constructs of the revised Almost Perfect Scale, which included high standards, order, and discrepancy between standards and performance. Despite the fact that the different approaches yielded different classification results, all three approaches generated profiles of three perfectionist types interpretable as nonperfectionists, healthy perfectionists, and unhealthy perfectionists, suggesting that healthy perfectionists tended to outnumber unhealthy perfectionists and nonperfectionists. Implications of the findings for working with perfectionist students and future research on perfectionism and perfectionist types are discussed.

The drawing abilities of 297 Hong Kong Chinese students were assessed by two expert judges based on two drawings done by each student, using two drawing tasks originally used in Clark's Drawing Abilities Test. These expert ratings were examined in relation to students' self-ratings on the same drawings, self-reports on their involvement in drawing activities, and performance on spatial tests on mental rotation and impossible figures. The results of multiple linear regression analysis suggested that a greater involvement in drawing activities and a higher score on impossible figures task, in addition to being female and a secondary school student, were associated with higher ratings from expert judges. Implications of the findings for assessment of visual arts talent are discussed.

This article addresses the cross-cultural generalization of the pentagonal implicit theory of giftedness (Sternberg & Zhang, 1995) as well as differential expectations regarding excellence for girls versus boys. First, we used an instrument based on the pentagonal theory with a sample of in-service and pre-service teachers at the University of Hong Kong. Second, we administered a questionnaire designed to assess conceptions of “excellence,” one of the attributes for giftedness described in the pentagonal model, to a different sample of in-service and pre-service teachers at the same university. We found a good fit of the pentagonal model to the data collected, paralleling results obtained in the U.S. We also found, however, that in Hong Kong, however, unlike in the U.S., participants had higher expectations of excellence for boys than for girls. These outcomes have implications for identification, instruction, and programming for the gifted.

Positive and negative perfectionism as well as four goal orientations were assessed in a sample of 315 Chinese gifted students in Hong Kong. These students tended to endorse positive perfectionism more than negative perfectionism and prefer learning and social goals over performance and avoidance goals. Learning and social goal orientations emerged as significant predictors in the prediction of positive perfectionism, whereas performance and avoidance goal orientations emerged as significant predictors for negative perfectionism. Implications of the findings for promoting healthy strivings for excellence through setting different goals are discussed.

This study assessed the profiles of eight intelligences of 133 gifted students from five perspectives based on their self-ratings and ratings by their mothers, fathers, teachers, and peers. Across different perspectives, logical-mathematical intelligence received the highest ratings whereas bodily-kinesthetic and naturalist intelligences received the lowest ratings. Based on the three profile similarity indices, elevation, scatter, and shape computed to describe each of the typical profiles of students, mothers, fathers, teachers, and peers, it was suggested that the mother perspective and the father perspective were more similar than those of teachers and peers. In addition, the indices also suggested the interpretation that mothers tended to be more sensitive to students' multiple intelligences than fathers, teachers, and peers. Students' perceived creativity and leadership were more predictable using the multiple intelligences from the student perspective. The implications of respecting multiple perspectives on students' multiple intelligences for helping to meet the needs of gifted students are discussed.

Mentoring as a time-honored and effective mode of training and teaching is briefly reviewed, highlighting the valuing of the mentoring relationship in educating gifted and talented youths in Chinese history. The current development of mentorship programs for gifted students at the Chinese University of Hong Kong is explained with examples from the search for potential mentors within the university community, and the development and operation of the mentorship program of Chinese creative writings for Hong Kong students. Future directions in the development of mentorship programs for gifted students using reformation technology and peer mentors in double mentoring are discussed, and a model of three levels of mentoring encompassing telementoring, double mentoring, and one-to-one mentoring is suggested.

One hundred seventy secondary schools in Hong Kong responded to a questionnaire designed to assess their needs for leadership training of students in different domains of school activities and their endorsement of university-school collaboration in these activities. The questionnaire also assessed the extent and degree of support and involvement that schools intended to provide in training programs and in organized school activities for students to assume leadership roles in schools. Findings indicated that schools were in need of student leaders in different student activities, especially in those less related to academic concerns. It was stressed that in providing opportunities for student leaders to continue practicing their skills in school activities, other students might eventually benefit through participation in school activities and peer support programs organized by student leaders.

Gifted education in Hong Kong reflects the Chinese tradition of valuing and nurturing special abilities in children. Thus, identifying and selecting gifted and talented students into programs are central. Currently, procedures in Hong Kong generally emphasize the use of standardized instruments for identifying the intellectually gifted (using the Hong Kong Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children or Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices), the academically gifted (using the Hong Kong Attainment Tests), and the creatively gifted (using the Chinese versions of the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking or the Wallach-Kogan Tests). Advocating the use of multiple criteria, educators in Hong Kong also employ informal measures such as nominations and rating scales. The complexity of the identification process was illustrated with the Chinese University Summer Gifted Program procedures of nomination, screening, and selection based on multiple measures and the ultimate criteria of matching individual specific needs with program services available. The issues regarding students being labeled as gifted or nongifted as a result of identification, the all-or-none misconception of giftedness, and the need to design and evaluate multiple measures and identification procedures are discussed.

The development of gifted education in Hong Kong, and the rationale for leadership training for gifted and talented students are briefly described. The Creative Leadership Training Program for gifted and talented students at the Chinese University of Hong Kong incorporates the components of teaching leadership characteristics, teaching component leadership skills, and putting students into leadership roles in activities that emphasize creativity and a futuristic orientation. Based on the notion that leaders empower others to lead themselves, following training, students are supported to practice their skills in leadership, and transfer these knowledge and skills to their peers in their respective schools in school-based programs of peer tutoring and peer counseling. While favorable feedback regarding the training program has been received from participants, their experiences in practicing their leadership skills in school-based peer support programs have yet to be reviewed in future program evaluation studies.
