In 1998, the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region began a large-scale project to import qualified, experienced native-speaking teachers of English into Hong Kong secondary schools. The Native-speaking English Teacher (NET) scheme later expanded to include Hong Kong primary schools. Currently, teachers from around the world are placed in local (Hong Kong) classrooms and staffrooms. This intersection of local and global teaching professionals is the site for the examination of interculturalist theories through interactionist methodologies. Data in the form of a semi-structured interview with a Local English Teacher (LET) is analysed using Membership Categorization Analysis. The analysis addresses two key questions. First, how are intercultural categories and attributes talked into being? Second, how can examination of these categories lead to improved understanding of the intersubjective relations between local and expatriate teachers? Findings from analysis have implications for teachers' professional development in cross-cultural contexts.

This article discusses a study on how language use and language development can be promoted through engaging students in different participation roles in board games. Theoretically, the study is grounded in sociocultural perspectives of activity theory and the role of play as a form of human motivation. A group of Grade 4 primary students learning English as a second language in Hong Kong participated in the games, with alternating roles as players and facilitators. Students' discursive and embodied participation in the games was analysed to reveal how changing participation roles constitute a form of social-relational mediation that motivates students' deployment of different interaction practices and multimodal semiotic resources to achieve context-sensitive, object-related and goal-directed actions in collaborative group activities. The data also show students' agency and self-regulation when they enacted the same participation role with different subject positions and semiotic resources. This article concludes by calling for more attention to how engaged participation resulting in situated purposeful language use can be promoted through different forms of participation in social activities such as board games.

Elements of popular culture, in particular the film and song genres, have already been integrated into the senior curriculum in Hong Kong. While academic researchers advocate the inclusion of online social networking and video gaming as curricular alternatives to connect learners to digital literacy practices, its reception by teachers has yet to be fully explored. This paper reports on an action research carried out by 34 Hong Kong English teachers on video gaming and social networking. Though the teachers believed their students frequently engaged in such popular activities, they had strong reservations concerning classroom application, in particular the values of online gaming and the dangers of online social networking. Through a survey, interviews, lived experience, online journal entries and responses and reflection, these teachers explored the two popular cultural practices for personal experience, pedagogical potential and professional development. The teachers' own private engagement with such popular cultural activities did not necessarily favour pedagogical consideration. The paper also discusses the pedagogical implications of seeking alternative popular cultural activities for language learning and teacher training.

The distributive law or distributive property is a fundamental algebraic property in the arithmetic of numbers and algebraic expressions. This paper reports on an investigation of students' understanding of the distributive law through task-based interviews from the perspectives of constructivists. It explores students' lack of appreciation of the algebraic structure underpinning the distributive law, particularly amongst students who were already proficient in arithmetic and the distributive law. A total of 203 students from one secondary school of average standard in Hong Kong participated in this study, which adopted a cross-sectional approach. Thirty-three students were then interviewed. The study showed that although some students made progress in the understanding and application of the distributive law, others could not make sense of the meaning of variables and algebraic rules. Therefore, their algebra remained a routine instrumental application of rules, and their understanding of the algebraic structure was incomplete. This paper concludes with a discussion on how the tasks used in the interviews provided teachers with an innovative alternative to deepening students' understanding of letters as variables and the distributive law.
