This article analyzes higher education research published in international higher education journals by researchers from China, Hong Kong, Japan, and Malaysia from 1980 to 2013. It does so based on publication counts, and co-authorship and cross-citation mapping, examining these countries' publication patterns in terms of thematic approach and community cohesion. The results show that each country has experienced distinct evolutions of higher education research, both in terms of the number of publications and thematic diversity. The research organization analyzed by co-authorship networks shows that higher education researchers in Hong Kong tend more to integrate two higher education research approaches -- teaching and learning, and policy studies -- into their research work. It is also in Hong Kong where most higher education researchers focus their research on both teaching and learning, and policy topics. Higher education researchers in China, Japan, and Malaysia are more thematically specialized in terms of both their positioning and their co-authorship preference. These findings suggest that a broader integration of different thematic areas may be linked more to path-dependent and contextual characteristics than to differences related to the development stage of higher education systems. This is confirmed by the cross-citation analysis, which shows that higher education researchers based in Hong Kong tend to cite each other more frequently than do those based in Japan, China, and Malaysia, suggesting a much greater community cohesion in Hong Kong than in these other countries. The findings highlight that while the maturity of a higher education system influences community cohesion, other factors influence thematic leaning and integration.

In the past decade, there have been numerous researches on motivation, which is generally agreed to be the key to student learning. Concepts like intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, students’ perception of their own competence and sense of control over their study, mastery-oriented goal or performance goal theories are much explored. These researches have generated theoretical support and arguments for educational reforms taking place in the 1990s in the educational scene in Hong Kong. However, the outcome of the research findings, which is vital to successful teaching and implementation of new education policy, is always given only fragmented and superficial treatment in most teacher training courses. Consequently, teachers in Hong Kong cannot see why they are forced into adopting new practices different from traditional methods, creating a huge gap between beliefs and actual practices. This paper argues that the rich knowledge base on motivation has already had its impact in shaping educational reforms in Hong Kong but teachers and educational practitioners are not ready to cope with the changes mainly because of the lack of coherent effort to organize this important body of knowledge into programs that help teachers see the linkage between old and new educational practices.

This study is aimed at exploring the evolution and characteristics of higher education research in Hong Kong within the special context where neoliberalization, internationalization and "sinicization" simultaneously drive the development of universities and academic community in the city-state. This study analyzes the research outputs of Hong Kong on higher education between the 1980s and the 2000s. The publication data on higher education research will draw on Scopus database and will focus on journal articles. The selected research outputs will be analyzed by themes and issues so as to explore what types of issues higher education researchers have been most interested in and the extent to which their interests have reflected and responded to the systemic changes in higher education in the last three decades.

Exploring teachers' attitudes towards research is always interesting. Following the decision of the Education and Manpower Bureau to create a position of Primary School Master/Mistress (Curriculum Development) (PSM(CD)) in Hong Kong primary schools, it becomes significant to understand and beliefs which these curriculum leaders hold with respect to action research - as a means to help schools to reflect upon their strengths and to decide how best to bring about reform in curriculum. A survey of 209 PSM(CD)s suggested that in general they favoured using research in their work. A four-factor model indicated that the majority of the respondents perceived themselves as having the ability to do research, valued research for professional development and providing solutions to teaching and learning deficiencies, and found the action research course useful. The survey results showed that demonstrated research experience and holding higher degree qualification had no significant impact on attitudes to action research, but that those attitudes were associated positively with the participants' sense of self-efficacy, an internal locus of control and their commitment to their school. The work will contribute to gaining an understanding of how curriculum leaders' participation in school-based curriculum research and development can be facilitated.
