作為凝聚有特殊教育需要子女家長的處所，特殊學校是有責任組織適切的活動，支援家長克服子女的學習及成長困難。本文概述一所收取中度智障學童的學校，如何透過發展性小組去支援校內的家長，並探討如何就這些孩子家長的需要、家校合作的現況、家長參與的層次與區分、家長賦權歷程、學校背景、朋輩輔導及小組發展歷程等概念，去全面理解不同持分者在籌辦家長互助小組過程中，要準備的工作及注意事項。透過有層次地去組織支援家長的「伴你同行」小組，除能夠支援更有需要的家長，加強他們處理子女學習、行為、情緒問題，增強親子關係並完備家庭與學校合作的同時，亦促使家長間建立一個非常規的支持和朋輩網絡。 Special schools being a place for gathering parents of students with special educational needs bear the responsibility of organizing supporting services for these parents to overcome difficulties encounter by their children. The paper describes the efforts of a special school for moderate intellectually disabled students in applying developmental group work to support the parents of the school. While considering the needs of these parents, current trends of home-school cooperation, differentiated levels of parental involvement in a school, parent empowerment process, school background, peer tutoring and group development processes for enhancing the understanding of different stake-holders of the school to plan and organize parent groups of such purposes are examined and applied. In the end, not only that the parent support group supported the more needy parents in strengthening their methods of coping with learning, behavioural, emotional difficulties and parent-child relationship. The support group too facilitated home school cooperation process, an informal peer support network amongst these parents is formed as another source of support for parents of the school.

本文敍述本地一所中學如何透過全面地改革課程、教材、教學法及評估,推進融合教育發展的一段歷程。該校副校長以局內人的身份,闡述學校如何打破教師「各自為政」的文化,培育着重分享協作的團隊,以照顧不斷增加有學習困難學生的需要。This paper chronicles the comprehensive restructuring in curriculum, learning materials, instructional practices, and assessment in a local secondary school moving towards inclusive provision. It is written from the insider’s perspective of the school’s Vice Principal who recounts how the school moved away from practices of teaching in isolation and embraced a culture based on sharing and collaboration among teachers to accommodate the needs of an increasing number of students with learning difficulties.

This study involved 34 female adolescent students attending mathematics classes in a girls' hostel in Hong Kong. The subjects' ages ranged from 12 to 18 years. All students exhibited varying degrees of emotional and behavioural problems, and all experienced learning difficulties in mathematics. The study aimed to discover whether the use of a simple token reward system would increase the students' work output, participation rate, accuracy, and neatness of bookwork during mathematics lessons, and whether the system would also have a positive influence on the girls' attitude toward mathematics. The four-week intervention programme involved the provision of token rewards during lesson time to every girl who showed any improvement in any of the four aspects of learning. Baseline measures were taken over a two-week period before the intervention commenced, and regular measurements were taken during and immediately after the programme. The same measures were taken again four weeks after the reinforcement programme had ended to check for maintenance. The results showed that the use of tokens did lead to significant improvements (in most cases p <.01 or better) in work output, participation rate, accuracy and neatness while the programme was in operation. Performance declined, however, in all but neatness once the tokens were no longer in use. The decline in scores did not regress to the baseline level, but most differences were no longer statistically significant. Very minor attitudinal changes in a positive direction were noted; but only in one case did these reach statistical significance.

Although there are studies showing that higher education would benefit university students, empirical research that comprehensively assesses student general education learning outcomes and related demographic correlates based on longitudinal data is minimal, especially in the Chinese context. To address the research gaps, the present study was conducted to investigate learning outcomes amongst university students in one university in Hong Kong based on a four-year longitudinal design (N = 460). Four dimensions of student general education learning outcomes were measured, including effective reasoning and problem solving, leadership, moral character, and integration of learning. Results suggested a U-shaped pattern of student learning outcomes for most dimensions, with no improvement or even a decrement in the second year and a steady growth thereafter. While family background did not affect student development, gender showed a significant moderating effect on students’ development in two dimensions (i.e., effective reasoning and problem solving, and integration of learning). These findings suggest that students benefit from general education-embedded university study in multiple dimensions, especially after the first year of transition period. Practical implications of the findings and future research directions were also discussed.

Drawing on self-based L2 motivation theories, the present study explored changes in the English learning motivation of eight Mainland Chinese undergraduates after their arrival at a Hong Kong university, where they took most of their courses in English. The participants were surveyed and interviewed retrospectively about their English learning experiences both in Mainland China and Hong Kong. After their relocation to Hong Kong, most participants reported heightened motivation. While their motivation generally remained stable at a high level, there were some fluctuations. The motivational enhancement may be influenced by the continuous interaction between the participants’ perceptions of different contexts of Hong Kong and their shifting actual and ideal L2 selves. The motivational fluctuations appeared to be affected by an interplay between the participants’ L2 selves and specific L2-related learning experiences such as preparation for English proficiency tests. As these activities came to an end, the participants’ motivation returned to its original state. Implications are offered to support the transitions of English as a foreign language learners to an environment where English is used as the medium of instruction.

This study investigated the effects of two vocabulary instructional approaches on Chinese EFL primary school students (n = 31) to vocabulary learning, extended and incidental instructions, with using a between-subject design. Student's general intelligence and initial English ability were entered as covariates. The extended instruction featured multiple encounters to vocabulary, providing opportunities to apply as well as encouraging active and deep processing. The incidental instruction featured natural exposure to the words and learning vocabulary through readings. The instructional effects on student's vocabulary knowledge were assessed by three measures: target word mastery, expressive definition as well as word association. Extended instruction showed an advantage in building up vocabulary breadth in students compared to incidental instruction. Both instructions seemed inefficient on enhancing depth of vocabulary knowledge. Implications of present findings are discussed and directions about future research are suggested. This chapter presents a qualitative study of the language-related educational experiences of a group of immigrant mainland Chinese students in a multilingual university in Hong Kong. Drawing on interview data, this study explored the construction process of the language ideologies of these students and the social, contextual and interpersonal factors that may influence the construction. This study identified the problems and issues that Hong Kong university academics need to address in order to build a more inclusive learning environment to accommodate the language needs of these Chinese students. Furthermore, this study explored effective ways of maintaining cultural and linguistic diversity in the multilingual universities in an era of globalisation. This study provided implications as to how the immigrant students can employ the multilingual practices as a symbolic resource instead of as a disadvantage constructed by the institutional ideologies. 國際化是現時高等教育界的一個重要議程和發展方向，也是主流評級機構用以評核大學的其中一個因素。各界對國際化的定義不盡相同。在香港，有意見指實施國際化目的就是為了強化「香港的特徵」，從而增加國際學生與本地學生相互文化發展機會。境外學習活動既可以提升學生多方面的技能，亦能讓他們獲得個人全面發展及擴闊全球視野。透過瞭解國際化的定義，以及一所本地大學在其國際化進程中為學生提供境外學習的經驗，我們可對香港高校學生怎樣在國際化中獲益有更深瞭解。 Copyright © 2017 香港教師中心.
