本文透過對《課程綱要》和教師問卷結果的分析，探討本港小學普通話科評估工作中的問題，然後根據普通話科的教學目標、小學的客觀教學環境和語言評估理論，提出適用於本港小學普通話科的聆聽和口語評估模式，供教師和師資培訓者討論和參考。
This paper attempts to examine the defects in assessment works of primary Putonghua subject based on the analysis of subject syllabus and outcomes of a teacher questionnaire. In accordance with teaching objectives, teaching environment and theories of language assessment, a mode being regarded suitable for assessing Putonghua listening and spoken language abilities of primary students is introduced.

In the process of Hong Kong's political transition to the Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, various political forces have been generating impact on the curriculum changes. This paper aims to use the secondary History subject as a case study to demonstrate the implications and complications of curriculum changes in addition to analysing how politics and curriculum interact in the dialectical web of localism, nationalism and globalism. It is expected that it will shed light on the role played by History curriculum in helping pupils to develop local identity in national context while cultivating a sense of global citizenship.
在香港的政治過渡為中華人民共和國特別行政區的過程中，不同政治力量一直對課程的轉變產生影響。本文以中學歷史科為個案，展示課程轉變的含義與複雜性，並分析政治與課程如何在一個地方主義、國家主義和全球主義的辯証關係網絡中產生互相作用。作者期望本文能闡釋歷史課程如何能幫助學生在國家體系中發展本地身份認同而又同時培養世界公民的意識。

為配合最近幾年本港教育改革和社會的轉變，我們有需要培養能獨立思考、具有解難與有創意的學生，以面對21 世紀的挑戰。在教育上要達到上述目的的方法有多種，而在中文教學上應用比較教學法，可能是一項有效的方法。
本文討論比較教學法的理論，包括它的涵義、價值、種類、設計與施行。其次舉出幾種教學實例，最後並論及它的優點與局限。
To cope with the local educational reforms and the change of Hong Kong society, with the aim of facing the challenge of the 21st Century, it is especially urgent that we should train our youngsters in the way that they can think independently, creatively and can solve the problems themselves. There are many ways in educational aspect to achieve these goals. The use of comparison teaching method in the teaching of Chinese may be one of the effective ways.
This article dues with the theory of comparison teaching method, including itsdefinition, its value, its types, the different designs and how to put them into practice. In the end, it will discuss the strong points to use this method as well as its limitations.

寫作教學一直是語文老師感到頭疼的事情。許多小學生一聽到要作文，便流露厭煩的神色，覺得寫作是一件苦差。學生對寫作沒有興趣，只是敷衍成篇，交差了事。全班的作文往往千篇一律，全無新意，教師也以改作文為痛苦的事。為了要改變這種情況，香港有些小學進行了寫作教學的改革。一九九四年，開始在一所小學推行寫作教學的新嘗試，名為「全語文寫作教學」；一年後，增至三所小學。一九九七年，又增加到九所小學。全語文寫作教學參考自全語文取向 (Whole Language Approach) 的精神，是以學生為中心的一種教學法，它的信念是：文字是用來溝通的，因此要注意教材的實用性，同時也注重聽、說、讀和寫的配合。本文的目的是：介紹全語文寫作教學的理念和推行的過程，探討這個寫作計畫對香港的學校、教師、學生和寫作課程的影響。
The teaching of writing is always a headache to Chinese language teachers. Many students in primary schools show no interest to composition lesson and they just finish writing casually. Language teachers also feel that it is very dull to correct students' composition as they are all the same. In 1994 , a primary school in Hong Kong conducted a reform of teaching of Chinese writing. The school adopted a new writing project named as "Whole Language Writing Project". In 1997, there were 9 schools joined this project. "Whole Language Writing Project" is student-based. It emphasizes on the practical use of writing and the combination of writing, reading, speaking and listening. This paper tries to introduce the theory and account for the implementation of this writing project. The influence of the project on students, teachers, schools and the curriculum of writing are also included.

In the past three decades, the Hong Kong primary Social Studies curriculum experienced several changes. Since each phase of development has been influenced by various internal and external factors, the curriculum itself could naturally reflect the social physiognomy and spirit of the time. By utilizing the methodology of documentary analyses, this paper aims to analyse the changing features and meanings of the Hong Kong primary Social Studies curriculum at each developmental phase from 1967 to 1997. It is hoped that the paper will shed light on how the Social Studies curriculum has responded to and reflected the contextual changes of different times.
三十多年來，香港的小學社會科課程經歷了數次的轉變。由於每一次的轉變都受各種內在及外在因素所影響，故課程本身亦反映不同時代的面貌及精神。本文以文獻分析的方法，探討小學社會科課程在一九六七至一九九七年期間不同發展階段的特色和意義，並展示它如何配合及反映不同時代的環境轉變。

二零零零年，香港課程發展議會發表教育改革諮詢文件，重申跨學科課程對於學童在整全性知識發展方面的作用。事實上，小學常識科作為一個跨學科課程已推行了五年。教師對於這種課程的理念、認識及實踐，對課程改革的進一步發展，實在有其參考值。本文以問卷調查為工具，用定量分析研究教師對跨學科課程的認知程度及實施情況，以探討學科統整改革的正確路向。
In 2000, the Hong Kong Curriculum Development Council published the consultation document on educational reform, re-affirming the role played by integrated curriculum in the holistic development of the pupils. In fact, General Studies, as an integrated curriculum, has been implemented for five years. Teachers’ perception, knowledge, and practice of such integrated curriculum would definitely have referential and revelatory values for the further development in curriculum. This paper adopts a quantitative approach with the use of questionnaire survey as an instrument to analyse teachers' perception, knowledge, and practice of integrated curriculum for the sake of charting the proper course for its future development.

This paper will consider the use of English medium textbooks in bilingual situations and will briefly present the results of a survey of 24 schools in Hong Kong. Language and textual constraints may both inhibit the efficient reading of content subject textbooks in school. It will be argued that textbooks are "inconsiderate" in not making rhetorical (top-down) structures clear and that this is a neglected cause of student difficulty. Practical examples for making books more "considerate" will be offered.
本論文探討在雙語環境中英文教科書的使用及簡述在二十四間香港中學進行意見調查的結果。結果顯示，語言及原文的約束可能妨礙學生有效地閱讀學科教科書。本文的論點是教科書沒有顯明「由上而下」的修辭結構，實為學生閱讀困難的被忽視的原因。本文將提出教科書應如何顧及讀者的實際方法。

Biotechnology has become an important modern advance that has significant social implications. While it is getting more exposure in the news, awareness of its nature, applications, and social impact among teacher trainees and school teachers and students are limited. In Hong Kong Institute of Education, serious efforts have been demonstrated by science staff to incorporate biotechnology curriculum materials for existing and new Science & General Studies modules in sub-degree, degree and PGDE courses. A number of hands-on experiments on biotechnology have been continuously adopted from both foreign and local sources. Multimedia teaching resources on biotechnology, such as CDs, videos and relevant issue-based materials are obtained. Also, teaching guidelines regarding their use in the teaching and self-study purposes are being worked out. It is hoped that the trained graduates can help promote Biotechnology education to their pupils.
生物科技近年取得突破進展，對社會影響日深。雖然有關的新聞報導越來越多，但一般老師和學生對其質、應用及社會衝擊所知有限。香港教育學院科學系，嘗試將生物科技課題併入証書課程、學位課程及教育文憑課程的科學單元和常識單元內。作者透過本港及外國的資料，引進了一些可行的實驗。此外，也發展了一些生物科技的多媒體教學資源，例如：光碟、錄像及時事輯錄等。同時還製備了有關的教學指引以供準老師教學及自修之用。

This paper reports part of the findings from a project called, "Schools Around the World" which aims to offer opportunities for professional development among teachers participating in the project. Through the exchange of professional experiences between local teachers and teachers from other countries in the world, the development of a standard for students' achievement in science both locally and with reference to an international standard will be achieved. This project is originated from Schools Around the World Project (SAW) which was initiated in the United States by an education research foundation, Council for Basic Education (CBE). Apart from Hong Kong and the United States, there are seven other participating countries including Japan, the United Kingdom, Australia, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, and Portugal. It marks an innovative approach with its emphasis on teacher professional development. Instead of using curricular documents, textbooks or an one-off testing to find out standard of student achievement, SAW defines standard by engaging teachers in professional discussion about the nature of excellence and the methods of teaching. The excellence at issue is excellent student work. The project also aims to build up a professional network of teachers internationally such that teachers can work together to develop not only the local set of standards but also an international standard for students. Science which warrants much attention from the local educators has been designated as the first subject focus of the SAW project. This paper looks into the initial views of primary teachers about student work, assessment in science learning and the assessment of science projects at the primary level. The present study is now at the pilot stage, hence both the findings presented in this paper and the overall results of the pilot study provide important background information to the project in supporting the professional development of the teachers. 學習語文必須由基礎開始，循序漸進，因此，幼稚園的語文學習絕不容輕視。本研究從幼稚園教育工作者的角度出發，探究（一）香港幼兒文學作品的特點；及（二）幼兒文學在幼稚園教學中發揮的作用、困難及解決方法。本研究共發出180 份問卷予幼稚園教育工作者，並深入訪問了14 位幼稚園教育工作者。研究發現幼稚園教育工作者認為幼兒文學作品最重文字淺白、圖畫顏色悅目及人物造型生動，現時香港的幼兒文學作品雖能符合被訪者的期望，但其對幼稚園教學的作用則受到家長的重視程度、學生的閱讀興趣、良好作品的數量、教師的觀念和學校經費所限制。
Without concrete language foundation, children will find it difficult to use language as tools for learning when they grow up. Mastering of language abilities should therefore start progressively from elementary education. Language learning in kindergarten should not be neglected. The present study, from kindergarten educators' perspective, focuses on (1) characteristics of children literature in Hong Kong; (2) their functions and application in kindergartens. 180 questionnaires were distributed among kindergarten educators and 14 kindergarten educators were interviewed in details. It is found that simple words, colourful pictures and attractive figures were 3 important characteristics of children literature. Children literature in Hong Kong can meet kindergarten educators' expectation but its educational functions and application are limited by parents' attitude, children's reading interest, teachers' concept, insufficient children literature of good qualities and insufficient budget of schools.
