This research had two objectives. The first was to determine the reliability and validity of the multifaceted assessment of creativity (MAC) for evaluating Hong Kong university students' conceptions of creativity. The second was to establish if the theory–practice and gender gaps discovered among mainland Chinese university students would be replicated. The theoretical foundation for the MAC is the investment theory of creativity. Participants were 156 university students in Hong Kong. Results showed that Hong Kong university students' conceptions of creativity fit well with the six resources for creativity measured by the MAC: intelligence, knowledge, intellectual style, personality, motivation and environment. The present data not only confirmed the theory–practice and gender discrepancies previously found among mainland Chinese university students, but also revealed an additional gap –a theory–practice gap found only in participants' evaluation of female school students. Implications are discussed for research and for the psychology of teaching and learning.

The beliefs, attitudes, experiences and responses that Hong Kong higher education students have about assessment are an important facet to developing our understanding of the "Chinese learner" using six focus groups, 26 Hong Kong university students drew pictures of assessment. The visual elements of the pictures were content analysed into eight major categories (i.e. negative emotions, being monitored, competition, lifelong, pride and pleasure, marks, inaccuracy, and burden). The most frequent categories were negative emotions and being monitored. Associations between image categories and pre-university academic performance were statistically non-significant. In addition to the portrayal of the Chinese student as an effective, persistent learner, this study shows that Chinese students are very aware of the negative, controlling impact of assessment on their lives. This study contributes to our understanding of Chinese learners in Hong Kong.

Introduction: Intercalated BScs (iBScs) are an optional part of undergraduate (UG) medicine courses in UK, Eire, Australia, New Zealand, the West Indies, Hong Kong, South Africa and Canada, consisting of advanced study into a particular field of medicine, often combined with research. They potentially improve students' skills and allow exploration of specific areas of interest. They are, however, expensive for institutions and students and delay workforce entry. There is conflicting evidence about their impact. Methods: A mixed-method systematic review (meta-analysis and critical interpretive synthesis) of the biomedical and educational literature, focusing on the impact of iBScs on UG performance, skills, and career choice, and to explore students' and other stakeholders' opinions about iBScs. Results: In the meta-analytic part of this review, we identified five studies which met our predetermined quality criteria. For UG performance, two studies using different methodologies report an improvement in UG performance; one study reported an Odds Ratio [OR] of 3.58 [95% CI 1.47–8.83] and the second reported a significant improvement in finals scores (1.27 points advantage 95% CI 0.52–2.02). One study reported a mixed result, while two studies showed no improvement. Regarding skills and attitudes, one paper suggested iBScs lead to the development of deeper learning styles. With regard to subsequent careers, two studies suggested that for those students undertaking an iBSc there is an increased chance following an academic career [ORs of 3.6(2.3–5.8) to 5.94(3.6–11.5)]. Seven of eight studies (with broader selection criteria) reported that iBSc students were less likely to pursue GP careers (ORs no effect to 0.17 [0.07–0.36]). Meta-analysis of the data was not possible. In the critical interpretative synthesis analysis, we identified 46 articles, from which three themes emerged; firstly, the decision to undertake an iBSc, with students receiving conflicting advice; secondly

The transition into university life is crucial to the future achievements of the students. However, the experience of the transition may be different between male and female students, but this has not been empirically investigated in previous research. The purpose of this study is to examine the gender differences in the perception of university support. This research is based on a survey of 265 students from five universities in Hong Kong. The findings show that (i) more female students perceive the university as being supportive in their academic adjustment than male students; (ii) more male than female students perceive the university as being supportive in their social adjustment; and (iii) more male than female students perceive the university as being supportive in their psychological adjustment. Finally, the implications of the study are explored and discussed.

In this paper the authors employ a case study approach to investigate the transition process for a student with special educational needs from a Hong Kong subsidised primary school into a secondary school. An analysis of transcripts from individual and focus group interviews with the student, his parents, his 4 primary teachers and his 10 secondary teachers, as well as government documents and notes of school observations, indicated that a lack of formal procedures for supporting a student's transition can result in a range of significant difficulties. The discussion focuses on the urgent need to develop strategic guidelines at a systemic level within Hong Kong, with a much greater focus on a collaborative school approach rather than the current overreliance on the parents to lead this process.

Background: Little is known about sex knowledge, attitudes, and high-risk sexual behaviors among unmarried youth in Hong Kong. It is of public health importance to investigate this topic to inform sex education, policymaking, and prevention and intervention programs. Methods: Based on the Youth Sexuality Survey conducted by Hong Kong Family Planning Association (FPAHK) in 2011, this study explored the characteristics of sexual knowledge, attitudes, and high-risk sexual behaviors among 1,126 unmarried youth aged 18 to 27 years. Multiple logistic regressions were performed to examine factors associated with unmarried youth's premarital sex, casual relationships, multiple sex partners, and premarital pregnancy. Results: Unmarried youth in Hong Kong had adequate sex knowledge, but contraceptive knowledge was deficient. The majority of unmarried youth (63.8%) held liberal attitudes toward premarital sex and about half held liberal attitudes toward any form of sexual activity and premarital pregnancy. Around 60% held conservative attitudes toward causal sex relationships and multiple sex partners. Males tended to hold more liberal attitudes toward high-risk sex behaviors than female youth. Approximately 41.5% of unmarried youth reported having engaged in premarital sex, whereas less than 10% engaged in high-risk sexual behaviors. Males also reported higher amounts of premarital sex, casual sex relationships, and multiple sex partners. Females reported higher levels of sexual coercion. Logistic regressions indicated that being older, coming from a divorced family, out of school status and liberal attitudes toward risky sex behavior were more likely to engage in premarital sex or high-risk sex behaviors, and being female, being better educated and being immigrants were less likely to engage in premarital sex.
