91. An investigation into the teaching of argumentative structure to form 7 students in Hong Kong

This thesis reports that 31 F.7 students in an intact class conducted by the author were allocated into a control group and an experimental group that received instruction based on Toulmin model of argument and Tirkkonen-Condit's argumentative structure. Findings reveal that the experimental students felt empowered in their reading and writing skills and that, among them, students with lower English proficiency improved significantly after the instruction.

92. A study of the use of connectives in students' writing in AL classes

Argumentative essays written by 25 F.6 students in an Anglo-Chinese school in Tsing Yi were studied by the author. "Good" writers were found to use more connectives; however, a higher frequency of "overuse" appeared in their essays. The "poor" writers often misused connectives. Students rarely used conceptually difficult connectives, such as contrast and contradiction.

To understand the concepts of coherence in writing, the author examined ten group reports. Assisting students in understanding the concept of coherent writing prior to their writing is found to be seemingly productive.

The written feedback to senior form students' compositions of 20 local teachers were investigated by the author, who found that teachers tended to be a grammarian as their focus was on accuracy and that, in providing comments, some teachers took over students' own ideas.
