Educational researchers in Hong Kong has pointed out the inadequacy of the competency-based teacher education program in the past decade. A qualitative pilot study was conducted to examine how an inquiry-based Integrated Field Studies (IFS) course could help to facilitate early childhood teachers to become researchers of their own practice. The research project also examined how their learning experiences facilitate their professional growth throughout the course. The main data source for this study was semi-structured and individual in-depth interviews of in-service early childhood teachers. Additional data, such as, the participants’ written reports and IFS handbooks, were also collected for data analysis. The findings showed that the IFS courses were characterized by several features which could help enhance the growth of the teachers. They included: Freedom of choice on individual student’s area of interest for investigation; students being perceived as active learners; an opportunity for a continual and practical research experience; the provision of an interactive learning environment and a supportive role played by the supervisor. The study advocates a collaboration between the supervisor and the students to inquire into their teaching and learning experiences in future study.

A new instrument was devised to identify misconceptions in biology and probe into the causes of misunderstanding in a relatively quick way. It revealed that novice biology teachers held a number of conceptual errors which were prevalent among secondary school students. They showed serious misunderstandings in cellular metabolism, the nutritional process, gaseous exchange, the circulatory system, homeostasis, reproduction and variation. The problem has been attributed to inadequate mastery of subject knowledge and imprecise use of terminology. Specific teaching strategies were suggested to prevent the propagation of these misconceptions in students. Teacher education programmes should aim at promoting the awareness of teachers as to children's learning difficulties and developing their professional skills in facilitating children's conceptual development.

The paper reports a study that aims to compare Hong Kong student teachers' perceptions of the aims and objectives of their teacher education courses with the aims and objectives stated in the official course prescriptions. The results suggest that the two do not align because the students view education as a product and fail to recognize the importance of the overall education process.

The author describes in this paper the initial and inservice education of Hong Kong teachers, and explores how teacher education can be improved in the changing era. The author points out that, according to the Basic Law, Hong Kong will not dispose of the existing educational system, but will build and continue on it after returning to China in 1997. Issues on traditional focus on initial education and on developing teachers' capabilities in implementing the centrally developed curricula are discussed.
