Course management system (CMS) is expected to be a part of major system developments in educational intitutions as the information technology continues to emerge into all levels of education. Particularly, this trend has also been expanded to all post-secondary institutions. Indeed, the adoption of packaged commercial CMS (e.g. WebCT and Blackboard) is a common practice in most institutions, yet it is often lack of flexibility to satisfy the special needs in the institutions, especially in our community college. In addition to the issue of system design, a long-term financial commitment and the high cost of system maintenance are expected, which stands as the stumbling block in the college development To solve our challenges, we have adopted the Sakai Collaboration and Learning Environment (CLE) [1] that offers an open and community source framework. In this paper, we propose a practical implementation method based on our design experience on our newly developed CMS using the Sakai project platform. Our approach is a cost effective solution with minimum resources usage such as the size of the development team, project time frame, and hardware requirements. In addition, technical backgrounds including the system architecture, software installation, tools development and system enhancements will be introduced and explained in details. Hong Kong has been regarded as one of the strong examination-driven systems worldwide. Under the current education system, local secondary school students have to sit for the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE) at the end of Grade 12. Although the continuing assessment reform since 2000 tried to reduce the number of high-stakes examinations for secondary school students (from two to one at the end of the six-year secondary education), it remained a high-stakes public examination because the examination results usually have a significant influence on learners’ future pathways, including further education and employment. In respect of the COVID-19 pandemic since 2020, many international public examinations have been tried to be called off, but the Hong Kong government did persist in moving ahead with HKDSE. This aroused criticisms about whether the government has taken students’ well-being as a top priority because the annual survey on DSE students’ stress recorded the highest levels in 2020, 2021 and 2022. In this paper, the positioning and myth of HKDSE and its tie to Confucian philosophy will be examined. Students’ well-being is also discussed regarding rescheduling the examination and the impacts on the mental health of all DSE students, notwithstanding the challenges that can bring to any successful outcomes. Teaching students how to code in K-12 classrooms is considered as one of the major keys to promoting engineering education in the future, which can potentially enhance the competency and computational skills of students to adhere better learning outcomes in higher education. The success of promoting coding education or integrating it into school curriculum depends on the perceptions of teachers and headmasters in schools, and how well they believe on coding education and prepare for the innovative teaching and learning. In this exploratory research study, it reports the results of a large-scale quantitative questionnaire surveying 42 primary and secondary schools (n = 42) in Hong Kong, where computer programming has not been regulated as a compulsory course in K-12 curriculum. The questionnaire aims to investigate the school belief on coding education and their practical challenges while integrating it into their regular school curriculum. Our results show that there is a trend in the local schools promoting coding education with positive perceptions on teaching and learning. However, teaching challenges are also mentioned in the survey waiting for solutions, such as lack of teachers training and unified curriculum. Therefore, the empirical experiences of these schools have set forth the future research direction in design and implementation of coding education in K-12 classrooms not only in Hong Kong but also in the globe. Copyright © 2015 by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. Flipped-classroom learning has been shown to improve students' learning experience and performance in tertiary education. However, few studies have been done in Asia where the learning culture is vastly different from the West. Here, we studied the effect of flipped-classroom learning with the use of interactive videos on the academic performance of a group of first year undergraduate physics students in Hong Kong. By employing a conceptbased pre-test and post-test, normalized gains of 35% and 13% were obtained for the flipped and control class, respectively. A very strong correlation (r = 0.72, p <.001) was shown between the post-test score and the exam results of the flipped class, while the control class showed a moderate positive correlation (r = 0.37, p =.013). Our results showed that the conceptual knowledge of students taught in flipped-classroom improved significantly more than the students taught traditionally, and that their understanding in conceptual knowledge served as a stronger indicator of their exam performance. This chapter describes a small case study of differentiated instruction and inclusive design practices during a COVID-19-forced migration to online learning at a university in Hong Kong. Fourteen higher education instructors were interviewed, and their responses analyzed thematically. The participants reported that they felt overwhelmed with the workload to consider differentiated instruction initially; their sole focus was on delivering an online teacher-centred class. As they become more confident and familiar with a range of technologies, they started to differentiate instruction. They used student response systems to facilitate learning and focused on engaging learners in smaller groups. Their experiences suggest ways to facilitate differentiated instruction and design inclusive online classes in the higher education sector. This study examined reading motivation in Hong Kong secondary school students, taking account of school-related factors of medium of instruction, teacher support and peer support and demographic factors of gender, grade and socio-economic status. Specifically, the research questions were: (1) How are the school factors of medium of instruction, teacher support and peer support related to reading motivation in Chinese (first language; L1) and reading motivation in English (second language; L2)? (2) How are the demographic factors of socio-economic status, gender and grade related to reading motivation in Chinese and English? and (3) Are there differential patterns of prediction of school factors and demographic factors for Chinese and English reading motivation? The SRQ-Reading Motivation Questionnaire, designed to measure reading motivation as conceptualized by Self-Determination Theory (SDT), was adopted. Nine hundred and forty-one secondary school students participated in this study, from the grade levels of secondary one, four and six in seven secondary schools in Hong Kong. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that their reading motivation was comprised of two factors, Autonomous Chinese Reading Motivation (ACRM), Autonomous English Reading Motivation (AERM), Controlled Chinese Reading Motivation (CCRM) and Controlled English Reading Motivation (CERM). To address the three research questions, structural equation modeling was used to investigate the relationships among the variables examined in the present study. The findings showed that Teacher Support significantly predicted all reading motivation outcomes. A higher level of teacher support was associated with higher levels of autonomous and controlled reading motivation in the two languages. Peer Support was also a significant predictor of all reading motivation outcomes. Surprisingly, peer support had a negative relationship with controlled reading motivation in Chinese and in English but a positive relationship

Life education has recently attracted quite a lot of attention and some education researchers hope to enhance the students’ awareness and the value of their life, students’ self-protection ability, respecting life through education. There is an urgent need to assess and nurture the life education of primary school students in Hong Kong and Jiangsu. This study employs the case study method to assess and compare the life education of two Hong Kong primary schools with and without life education as a subject with two Jiangsu primary schools with and without life education as a subject. The principals, teachers and students were interviewed for the life education situation in their schools. Life education curriculums were classified by Transcendent, Community, Nature and Self. The practice and implementation of life education were evaluated by Intellectual, Emotional, Volitional and Practical. Results revealed that life education has been carried out in Hong Kong primary schools whether or not they set life education as an individual subject. However, compared with the life education in Hong Kong, the development of life education in Jiangsu is lagging far behind. Because life education in Mainland China is considered as a part of moral education which is highly political aspect, it is hard to claim that life education has no political. Although almost all principals and teachers in Jiangsu schools stated verbally that life education was very important to students, there is no impetus for them to take the initiative to push the development of life education. After all, life education, unlike other subjects, is a thankless and time consuming task. Compared with Jiangsu, life education in Hong Kong has made great progress which is being driven by some educators and some religious groups. However, there is also some limitation of life education in Hong Kong because there are not much resources and leadership from the Hong Kong government. Moreover, there are also some factors

Over the last three decades, there has been considerable transformation of global higher education institutions from a traditional role of teaching towards a contemporary role of diversified teaching, with intensive research and knowledge transfer taking place locally and internationally. Institutional transformations in Hong Kong’s higher education system over the last decade were no exception. Decentralised governance, increasing public accountability, social and economic responsibilities, enhancing quality and research excellence, sustaining society’s development through community engagement and knowledge transfer are essential changing functions and missions driving knowledge transfer strategy differences in the process of dynamic transformation. Knowledge transfer literatures reveal that they are usually associated with the third mission of higher education institutions, particularly in the knowledge-based economy context while facing society’s demanding role expectations and institutions’ fundamental transformation needs. To succeed in knowledge transfer and achieve the third mission, do different knowledge transfer strategies matter at the institutional and academic-based levels for striking challenges derived from the contemporary role and the mission of institutions? Nevertheless, different conceptual understandings of knowledge transfer, say interpreting from policy, implementation, organisation, and developmental perspective, may result in different interpretations on institutions’ strategy formulation, dissemination and implementation. However, these further align with their specified missions, roles, strengths, and stages of knowledge transfer development, inter alia, some identified knowledge transfer models. With the importance of achieving educational and social missions while enhancing sustainability through institutional knowledge transfer initiatives globally, there seems to be a lack of relevant studies in knowledge transfer strategies related to

Self-regulated learning (SRL) relates to self-generated thoughts, feelings, and behaviours that continuously amend and improve performance, aiming to accomplish self-set goals and the ability of people’s willingness to concentrate, adjust, evaluate, and manage their own behaviour. Studies strongly suggest that students’ academic success can be better achieved when the design of e-learning environments involves the consideration of SRL development. In recent years, e-portfolios are used widely and globally in higher education and have become one of the major active learning processes in self-learning online platforms that support students’ self-reflection, learning motivation, self-efficacy, and so on. There is a significant need for more studies on the full range of factors of SRL for higher education students in e-portfolios projects, including but not limited to understanding the influences, all possible factors, technical support, and students’ learning process and/or learning outcomes related to SRL.This research study aims to collect information directly from higher education students with actual practice in and experience of e-portfolios for two consecutive semesters. The quantitative data have been collected within the Pintrich’s (2004) social–cognitive perspective of the SRL framework and used the developed self-regulation of learning self-report scale (SRL-SRS), covering the six core factors of SRL: planning, self-monitoring, evaluation, reflection, effort, and self-efficacy. The same self-report paper questionnaire was distributed to 262 undergraduate year-1 students in semester 1 and semester 2. After data filtering, pretest and posttest data obtained from 134 valid questionnaires were used for analysis. The measuring result from the Rasch model has been analysed using SPSS 21, findings included a paired sample t test and the one-within-one-between subject analysis of variance (ANOVA).On the other hand, the qualitative research positively helps collect further
