International concerns about the educational equity of ethnic minorities have continued to highlight teachers’ abilities to be culturally responsive. How do teachers manage cultural diversity through their pedagogical practices in the absence of relevant teacher training? The answer to this question is essential as it may help move our understanding of diversity education forward in societies where ethnic diversity is not necessarily the norm. Drawing from observational data in a Hong Kong multiethnic secondary school, this paper explores two teachers’ pedagogies. I interpreted the data using Bernstein’s sociology of pedagogy to identify the nature of the class activities and instructional patterns about teacher control and pacing. These pedagogical practices, I suggest, emerged from power relations that reveal teachers’ efforts in recognising their students’ ethnic diversity while negotiating academic expectations on the students to excel in Hong Kong’s competitive examination system. The presence of non-Chinese pupils has brought to the fore a widening spectrum of learning needs in Hong Kong schools. Curriculum and teaching standards have likewise made clear the importance of creating equitable - with a view of eliminating barriers to - learning. The pathways to these equity goals from a cultural aspect, however, are unclear. This chapter aims to articulate an innovative approach to curriculum for diverse students by considering a more explicit connection between the notions of “caring” and “equity.” It will be argued that the notion of caring provides an important foundation for equity in teaching, especially in a Chinese schooling context marred by pragmatic and neoliberal conditions. These conditions, in part, underlie the integrationist orientation of curriculum responses to Hong Kong’s increasingly diverse student population. These responses often animate familiar policy and curricular rhetoric on ethnic minority learners’ early acquisition of Chinese language that can eclipse the cultivation of culturally inclusive environments. An expanded vision of equity based on caring attitudes will thus be proposed for teacher education to draw closer attention to the cultural dimensions within the curricular emphasis on learner diversity. Copyright © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Huixuan Xu; individual chapters, the contributors.

In recent years, international students' settlement experiences have emerged as a new focus in migration studies. This qualitative study examines the study-to-work transition experiences of 30 mainland Chinese graduates living in Hong Kong and deepens the current discussion of these students-turned-migrants' socio-cultural integration. Specifically, mainland Chinese students-turned-migrants experience ongoing challenges in their study-to-work transitions. Adaptation difficulties in their university years, including limited Cantonese proficiency, meagre cultural understanding of the host society, and weak connections with locals, continue to affect their subsequent employment and social integration. Our findings underscore the crucial links between international students' prior socio-cultural adaptation and their post-study settlement experiences. We also reveal everyday workplace microaggressions, which should receive greater attention from scholars interested in international students' and students-turned-migrants' intra-ethnic interactions. Over the past two decades Hong Kong's higher education institutions have become favored destinations for students from Mainland China. They find Hong Kong society both familiar and strange. Though Chinese, its political history differs markedly from their homeland's. Since 2010, moreover, conflicts have arisen in Hong Kong between local and Mainland Chinese people, culminating between 2017 and 2020 with clashes over issues of autonomy and governance. This study investigates Mainland Chinese students' experiences in Hong Kong during the 2017-2020 period, and the strategies they developed to cope with the pressures they faced. We found that coping strategies included: active approaches such as learning Cantonese and joining local student societies or campus activities; limiting their friendships to students from similar backgrounds; endurance and acceptance; and 'letting nature take its course'. The study also shows weaknesses in university assistance for Mainland students, and has broader implications for student support and identity formation. Copyright ©2024 SAGE Publications .

This study examines the interplay among language proficiency, use and attitudes of Shenzhen-Hong Kong cross-border students (CBS), a unique group of Hong Kong students who reside in Shenzhen and attend school in Hong Kong. A questionnaire survey of over 500 CBS reveals that Putonghua is their dominant language, followed by Cantonese, while their hometown dialect and English play peripheral roles. CBS show strong preferences for Putonghua, both instrumentally and integratively. Statistical analyses indicate significant correlations between CBS’ proficiency in the four languages and their attitudes towards them. The study identifies pairwise associations among CBS’ use of Cantonese at school, their proficiency in the language, and their attitudes towards it, forming a reinforcing cycle. However, no such patterns were found for Putonghua or English. The study concludes that improving CBS’ Cantonese proficiency and emotional connection to the language is essential for their integration into Hong Kong society, addressing identity challenges, and fostering a cohesive sense of belonging. Copyright © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Establishing international branch campuses (IBCs) has become one of the key strategies to facilitate the internationalisation of higher education. Researching IBC-related issues (e.g. student experiences, teaching practices, policy and governance) has also become a popular topic in international higher education. However, few studies have explored students’ identity formation in the IBC context. This qualitative study explores mainland Chinese students’ identity formation process in Hong Kong institutions’ intra-country branch campuses within the Greater Bay Area in mainland China. Drawing upon the notions of situated identity and global-national-local imbrications, this study unveils an intricate and nuanced process of identity development among students influenced by the interplay of global, national, and local factors in such an intra-country IBC context. The findings offer new insights into students’ identity formation in cross-border education. It also enhances understanding of the sustainable development of IBCs and strategies for internationalising higher education in the Greater Bay Area. 目前， 現有的針對香港非華語學生的中文教材存在數量有限， 質量參差不齊的問題。筆者認為造成這種現象的原因與在編寫和評估方面缺少理論指導相關。 因此， 為了達到系統且客觀的瞭解現有非華語中文教材的優缺點、 提升非華語學生中文教材的編寫水平,筆者參考了中文二語教材編寫和評估的理論、 原則及相關框架， 建構了適用於香港非華語學生中文教材編寫和評估的理論框架， 即《非華語學生中文教材編寫和評估框架》 。研究同時將框架應用於實踐中， 具體表現為： （1） 根據框架的指引， 評估現有的三套非華語中文教材， 並根據所得結果對框架的內容進行修訂； （2） 根據框架的指引， 編寫適用於課後補習性質中文輔導班的教材並邀請相關領域的前線教師、 專家和學者對教材內容進行評估， 依照評估所得的結果， 進一步修訂和優化框架內容， 從而構建最終版本的框架。研究結果顯示， 依照框架編寫的自編教材內容排布科學， 能夠得到前線教師、 專家及學者的認可。 本研究構建的框架能夠幫助前線教師、 專家及學者編寫和評估針對非華語學生的中文教材。 因為， 非華語學生長期居住在香港社區， 且主要來自於南亞國家，所以框架同時能夠為豐富地域化的教材評估標準做貢獻。All rights reserved.

Quantitative research on the linguistic acculturation of sojourners in non-Western and multilingual social contexts remains scarce. Revising the Framework of Acculturation Variables (FAV), we propose a parsimonious model exploring the effect of acculturation conditions (trilingual language usage and perceived discrimination), orientations (social connectedness to mainstream and minority community), and outcome (psychological well-being). In particular, we examined the alternative paths enabled by non-local languages in the acculturation process, revealing the complexity of multidimensionality in trilingual linguistic acculturation. The findings highlight the crucial mediating role of acculturation orientation in the acculturation process. Social capital accrued via cross-racial/ethnic networks plays an important role in the adjustment, persistence and success for minority groups of university students. Yet, few studies offered insight into how intercultural social capital impacts learning and socialising experiences among minority students in non-Western contexts. Drawing on interviews with minority university students in Hong Kong, this study canvassed their intercultural networking, its influences and institutional factors that conditioned its accessibility. Findings showed that participants garnered a full array of social capital in ethnic minority cliques, whereas their connections with institutional agents were more inclined to pastoral care rather than academic advising and mentor services. This study unearthed a campus environment wherein a monolithic Chinese/Cantonese culture and de facto racial/ethnic-segregation contributed to their restricted academic/social engagements with other counterparts and added to the manifestations of marginalisation in the literature that has been preoccupied with racial lines around the Black-White binary in Western contexts.
