- 作者指出，小學數學是小學教育的一個重要學科。數學課程的目標不斷地演變。特別是在普及義務教育條件下，在數學教育經歷了「新數運動」等大的變革的衝擊下，在許多方面都現出新的取向。香港的小學數學教育近些年來，也發生了一些變化。作者乃試圖以1983年《小學課程綱要—數學科》、目標為本課程的有關文件，以及新課程綱要初稿為藍本，對香港小學數學課程的目標作簡要的分析。作者指出，這些分析只是針對幾個文件中的數學教育目標，基本上停留在課程文件的層面，對課程目標的實施基本不作討論。
