Capitalizing on the comments made by teachers on videos of exemplary science teaching, a video-based survey instrument on the topic of 'Density' was developed and used to investigate the conceptions of good science teaching held by 110 teachers and 4,024 year 7 students in Hong Kong. Six dimensions of good science teaching are identified from the 55-item questionnaire, namely, 'focussing on science learning', 'facilitating students' understanding', 'encouraging students' involvement', 'creating conducive environment', 'encouraging active experimentation' and 'preparing students for exam (PSE)'. Significant gaps between teachers' and students' conceptions on certain dimensions have been revealed. The inconsistency on the dimension 'PSE' is particularly evident and possible reasons for the phenomenon are suggested. This study raises the important questions of how the gap can be addressed, and who is to change in order to close the gaps. Answers to these questions have huge implications for teacher education and teacher professional development.

Since 2008, outcome-based learning (OBL), a student-centred strategy aiming to enhance the quality of teaching and learning, has been launched as a major initiative among higher education institutions in Hong Kong. When adopting OBL at course level, other than designing the OBL framework, it is also very important to evaluate the effectiveness of the OBL implementation. However, studies focusing on the evaluation of OBL have been rare. In this paper, the authors will report on the evaluation of the implementation of OBL in 17 pilot courses in the English Department in the Hong Kong Institute of Education. Five evaluation instruments were developed, and questionnaire surveys and interviews based on these instruments were carried out to find out both students' and teachers' perceptions of OBL adopted in the pilot courses. The findings suggest that both the students and the teachers hold a generally positive attitude towards OBL, but a number of issues have been raised concerning the successful implementation of OBL at course level.

This article is about a qualitative research project concerning a group of expatriates' (TEFL/TESOL English language teachers) experiences in Hong Kong. Data related to their life, attitudes and cultural dispositions are discussed under four different states, namely, Adaptation, Drifting in Global Comfort, Drifting in Global Discomfort and Bitter/Sweet Home. Together, these contribute to their mobility pattern the Global Drift. The study discusses their global experiences and situations relating to the interplay of personal choice on the one hand and changing global and local processes and conditions on the other. It is argued that this is a self-perpetuating group sustained and reproduced by a Global Quality including distinct cultural dispositions, concepts of home and the reproduction of third-culture-kids, who are tailor-made for twenty-first-century mobile work. Finally, the research is situated in the study of cosmopolitanism, particularly in the identification of cosmopolitans and their dispositions. Alternative ways of theorising home (as interactive continuums) and issues related to mobility and dispositions will be discussed briefly.

Introduction: Intercalated BScs (iBScs) are an optional part of undergraduate (UG) medicine courses in UK, Eire, Australia, New Zealand, the West Indies, Hong Kong, South Africa and Canada, consisting of advanced study into a particular field of medicine, often combined with research. They potentially improve students' skills and allow exploration of specific areas of interest. They are, however, expensive for institutions and students and delay workforce entry. There is conflicting evidence about their impact. Methods: A mixed-method systematic review (meta-analysis and critical interpretive synthesis) of the biomedical and educational literature, focusing on the impact of iBScs on UG performance, skills, and career choice, and to explore students' and other stakeholders' opinions about iBScs. Results: In the meta-analytic part of this review, we identified five studies which met our predetermined quality criteria. For UG performance, two studies using different methodologies report an improvement in UG performance; one study reported an Odds Ratio [OR] of 3.58 [95% CI 1.47–8.83] and the second reported a significant improvement in finals scores (1.27 points advantage 95% CI 0.52–2.02). One study reported a mixed result, while two studies showed no improvement. Regarding skills and attitudes, one paper suggested iBScs lead to the development of deeper learning styles. With regard to subsequent careers, two studies suggested that for those students undertaking an iBSc there is an increased chance following an academic career [ORs of 3.6(2.3–5.8) to 5.94(3.6–11.5)]. Seven of eight studies (with broader selection criteria) reported that iBSc students were less likely to pursue GP careers (ORs no effect to 0.17 [0.07–0.36]). Meta-analysis of the data was not possible. Background: The Physical Education (PE) curriculum has already been reformed in most countries across the world. Problem solving, lifelong learning, and health issues have become major concerns of PE curricula. With the innovation of PE curricula, a variety of teaching approaches based on the constructivism learning theory have been designed and tested. Bunker and Thorpe, in an attempt to shift from the teacher-centred and skill-based learning to a student-centred approach, initially developed teaching games for understanding (TGfU), which links tactics and skills within a game context. This approach has attracted increasing attention from researchers and PE teachers, with a large body of literature examining the attitude of PE teachers and their implementation of TGfU. However, the differences in the perspective of TGfU among pre-service teachers, cooperating teachers, and university supervisors remain unexplored.
Purpose: The present study aimed to examine the views, learning experiences, and understandings of pre-service PE teachers, cooperating teachers, and university supervisors of TGfU in Hong Kong.
Context: Comprehensive PE curriculum reformation programmes were conducted in Hong Kong in 2002 and 2007 to promote student generic skills. The new PE curriculum has challenged teachers to introduce new strategies that promote students' generic skills, such as TGfU. Participants and settings: Ten pre-service teachers and their mentors, including nine cooperating teachers and three university supervisors were involved in the present study, which was conducted during the teaching practicum of pre-service teachers. Data collection: A semi-structured interview was conducted with each participant.
Data analysis: Interview data were analysed through deductive content analysis to identify meaningful pieces of information comprising the comprehensive text segment.

A major challenge for language teacher educators working in the area of teacher language awareness (TLA) is to develop pedagogical approaches that will go beyond merely enhancing L2 teachers' knowledge about language by enabling them to make the bridge between the declarative and procedural dimensions of TLA. This paper sets out to investigate the effectiveness of using online discussion forums to develop the language awareness of a group of student-teachers of L2 English in Hong Kong. Through content analysis of the 18 discussion threads initiated by these novice teachers, the research team found that despite the different reasons they had for posting their discussion topics, most of them had used extensively the e-learning platform to request help regarding the two dimensions of TLA, and that their reflections showed a strong tendency to move from the declarative to the procedural dimension of TLA. The study, though exploratory, has enhanced our understanding of learning to teach by opening up a small window for people to understand how TLA affected the teacher behaviour of this group of student-teachers during their teaching practice. The study also shows the research potential of using online discussion forums to understand teachers' language awareness development.
