This paper outlines a study that explored educational applications of blogs with a class of postgraduate students in a Hong Kong university over a period of one semester in 2006, and considers its outcomes. Rather than using the usual learning management system to support learning in the class, the facilitator-researcher organised a blog-based environment where students accessed course material, posted reflections featuring artifacts created in the learning tasks, commented on each other's contributions, and in other ways participated on a regular basis throughout the semester. The study results suggest that when appropriately managed by a facilitator, blogs have the potential to effectively support teaching and learning activities. The experience from this study also suggests that in order to maximise teaching and learning opportunities, a blog system can be effectively expanded by the use of a variety of other Web 2.0 applications.

Designed to make use of the immense power of World Wide Web (WWW) and facilitate a paradigm shift in education, VISOLE (Virtual Interactive Student-Oriented Learning Environment) is a new game-based situated learning paradigm which aims to enable student-centered learning taking place in a game-based interactive virtual environment Briefly speaking, the VISOLE approach is composed of 3 phases in which students have to (Phase 1) preliminarily acquire some high-level knowledge in specific subject domains through teachers' scaffolding; (Phase 2) actively participate as a game character in a game-based virtual interactive environment to construct knowledge and skills from their near real-life game-play experiences; (Phase 3) reflect and generalize their game-based learning experiences through teachers' debriefing
Under the present theoretical context of learning, digital games and game-based learning, this dissertation exploited and reinforced the VISOLE learning paradigm It also delineated the design and development of the first VISOLE game---"Farmtasia" and presented the empirical research on investigating the educational realization and accomplishment of VISOLE
Based on the specificity of educational technology research, "Development Research Method" was adopted as the methodological framework in the whole study Under this framework, a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods was employed for data collection and analysis, including the knowledge pre- and post-test, generic-skill test, perception survey, in-depth interviews as well as artifacts of students' reflective journals, reports and game-playing records All of these intensively focused on investigating students' and teachers' perceptions, students' learning motivation, behaviors, effectiveness with respect to the VISOLE approach and researching the design strategies for situated educational games

Much has been learnt about the advantages of computer-based self-access language learning (SALL). However, little is mentioned about the pitfalls of using SALL to promote learning independence. This article presents a study of some university students' use of SALL. It reports their responses to the integration of SALL into an ESL course. The subjects were required to do a SALL project to improve their English, develop interest in computer-based self-learning and enhance learner autonomy. On completion, they were asked to submit an individual portfolio about their SALL activities. Afterwards, a separate anonymous questionnaire was used to solicit their feedback on the effectiveness of SALL. Results from the two channels were surprisingly opposite: the former was positive while the latter was negative. A further analysis reveals that the subjects did not gain much from the project, and their positive comments were made as a part of their assignment. Comparatively, the negative comments mirrored their true feelings. According to the feedback, it would be less successful if SALL was treated as a compulsory learning task. Besides, to make SALL really helpful to the learners, the teachers' guidance is indispensable, particularly at the initial stages.
