    1. An investigation of pre-service teachers’ attitudes toward animals and empathy toward humans: Implications for humane education development

    In the last 20 years, humane education (HE) has undergone a paradigm shift from a simple animal welfare education model to a teacher-led positive education approach that cultivates kindness, love, and empathy in children and youth. While teachers’ humane attitudes are considered a prerequisite for HE program success in school settings, their attitudes toward animals have received little attention to date. This study investigated pre-service teachers’ humane attitudes toward animals and assessed whether and to what extent these attitudes are correlated with empathetic tendencies as well as variables such as gender and current and previous pet ownership. A total of 226 pre-service teachers in Hong Kong completed the Animal Attitude Scale (AAS) and the Davis Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI). The results showed that pre-service teachers showed moderate concern for the humane treatment of animals, and a difference in humane attitude was identified based on sex: female pre-service teachers tended to express more humane attitudes than their male counterparts. Moreover, pre-service teachers with greater tendencies toward warmth and compassion demonstrated a more welfare-oriented attitude toward animals. The results of the current study support using HE as a positive education approach and imply that the provision of training for pre-service teachers and teachers should be given higher priority by humane educators. Humane educators are recommended to recruit pre-service teachers as HE program instructors in their research projects. Copyright © 2020 ISAZ.

    2. Counsellors in Hong Kong primary schools: On becoming visible counselling professionals

    This article examines the implications of a new school counselling policy, namely, ‘one school social worker for each school’, for the professional identity of school counsellors and guidance and counselling services in Hong Kong primary schools. This paper reviews primary school counselling development since the 1970s with a focus on workforce planning. As a result, it identifies two themes: (1) counselling workforce planning has gradually shifted from purely government-led to more school-based planning, and (2) school counsellors with master’s-level counselling training qualifications are not adequately recognized in primary school settings. Making school counsellors visible to school principals, the Education Bureau and the public before the full implementation of the new policy in 2021/2022 is critical. The strategic positions of counsellor educators and counselling associations that are central to the advancement of the professional identity of school counsellors are discussed.     3. Ethics in school counselling

    This chapter aims to enhance teacher’s knowledge of the codes of ethics in counselling, to heighten their awareness of ethical issues and their competence in handling them, and to highlight the need for recognizing professional counselling work. The chapter begins with an exposition of the necessity for teachers to study counselling ethics, followed by a discussion of the importance and limits of the ethical codes, covering also significant ethical issues relevant to school counselling. In the discussions a case study format is adopted. By referring to several typical school counselling cases, the complicated and contradictory nature of ethical issues is illustrated. On the basis of the ethical codes laid down by Western and local professional counselling organizations, methods appropriate to the Hong Kong school culture and social environment are proposed.
