作者認為香港的語法教學不應走內地語法教學的老路，語法教學的新趨向是：一、考慮語法教學在語言教學中所佔的比例；二、語法教學是潛藏於語言課程中或明白地列出；三、配合甚麼語言教學法施教。作者舉出了許多語法教學的研究為例去討論上述三個因素。結論是語法教學是一種連續體，由明示性低至明示性高，由語法成份低至語法成份高，而香港語法教學不宜採用明示性太高的方式，而應針對香港中文教學的特點，採用傳意語言教學法的兼容語法教學，重視語言的應用，並制訂適合香港中學生的語法教材。（鄭佩芳整理）

作者認為內地的語法教學以語法為中心，以語法知識為重點，使知識不易轉化為技能。他提倡建立以學生為中心，重視教學實際，強調語言運用的「學生語法」方案。教師可視學生能力等因素來考慮用不用或用甚麼術語等問題。語法項目亦未必要教全，可祇選教學生錯誤頻率高的，更應重視粵語國語對比學習。教學方法應視乎學生的學習情況及時間分配以決定採用明示式或潛藏式。語法教學的當務之急是做常錯句型研究以幫助決定教材的取捨及教學次序。（鄭佩芳整理）
