Teachers play an important role in delivering health education to empower students with skills for healthy living to prevent non-communicable diseases. One of the common non-communicable diseases is hypertension that its development is highly associated with unhealthy lifestyle. A survey was administered to assess 130 pre-service teachers and 54 in-service teachers who were taking the health education course to prepare them for teaching the content of healthy living in Hong Kong. The assessment included their knowledge level of hypertension, attitudes towards lifestyle modification education to students, perception of knowledgeable to give health education. It was found that the knowledge level related to hypertension was generally below average among the teachers. Although they considered that lifestyle modification was an effective way to enhance students’ well-being, both pre-service and in-service teachers were reluctant to take responsibility for lifestyle modification education to their students. Lack of skill training was perceived as a problem. Teachers’ perception on health education should not be limited to the provision of simple information and advice. There is a need to improve teachers’ health literacy on some common non-communicable diseases.

The science-technology-society agenda has evolved over time to meet emerging educational aims in the light of changes in society and the environment. There is increasing emphasis on students' decision-making on socio-scientific issues (SSIs) not only to highlight the intricate relationships between science, technology, society, and the environment, but also to allow students to incorporate multiple viewpoints into the development of critical reasoning and responsible citizenship. Most research emphases have been on the rationality of reasoning rather than on the internal psychological context that underpins reasoning. This paper explores how these various aspects of reasoning interact in decision-making on SSIs in health contexts through case studies of recent issues in this field. The case studies reveal the negotiation of multiple influences in addressing SSIs in health contexts and the potential interactions between the psychological processes of individuals, science, and sociocultural perspectives. A tentative model to address these interactions emerges from this explorative study and has implications for the use of health-related issues in promoting SSI education.

The Hospital Authority employs over 60,000 staff and manages 41 public hospitals and institutions, 47 specialist outpatient clinics and 74 general outpatient clinics throughout Hong Kong. It received HK$41.14 billion (L3.475 billion) of funding from the government in the year 2012 to 2013, which represented 92% of its funding income (Census & Statistics Department, 2013). This public healthcare system uses 3% of the Hong Kong gross domestic product (GDP) to provide 88% of inpatient services and 28% outpatient services locally, while the private sector provides only 12% of inpatient services and 72% of outpatient services with 2.3% of GDP. There is a heavy reliance on the public sector to provide healthcare to most of the patients requiring more intensive hospitalization. Hong Kong currently only has about 280 specialists in psychiatry serving a population of over 7 million people, of whom 90 work in the private sector. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Mental Health Atlas 2011 country profiles (WHO, 2011), the number of psychiatrists per 100,000 population is 4.39, compared to 12.76 in Australia, 10.1 in Japan, 5.12 in Korea, and 2.81 in Singapore. There is a shortage of psychiatrists, especially in the public mental health sector, which urgently needs to be tackled. This article looks at the current trend in psychiatry teaching and recruitment from medical school and the training scheme provided by the Hong Kong College of Psychiatrists.

Service users' and carers' involvement in health and social care education has become a mainstream activity in Britain. However, members from black and minority ethnic communities (BME) remain under-represented in this area of participation. In this article, we will take the readers across the globe to explore the difficulties and opportunities of engaging such an under-represented group, the Chinese community. The journey will begin in Britain where barriers to engagement of service users and carers from the Chinese community will be discussed. We will then travel to Hong Kong, a cosmopolitan city, where successful engagement in work with Chinese service users and carers will be explored. Throughout the journey, we will highlight the importance of the consideration of cultural factors, particularly Confucian beliefs such as social harmony and collectivism, when working with Chinese people. We will also fully explore the issue of 'trust' as a culturally laden concept in Chinese societies and its significance for successful engagement in work with Chinese service users and carers in different parts of the world.

In this rapidly changing health care environment, practitioners and educators need to be flexible thinkers and skilled in clinical reasoning. They need to develop divergent approaches to solutions to complex, ill structured problems. Ill-structured problems in health care are problems that are not clearly delineated in that the nature of the problem, intermediate steps and goals are often unknown at the referral and initial interview stages of intervention. The clinical reasoning used to understand and solve this type of problems requires more than just guessing, ignoring, appealing to authority, or using rote protocols (Facione & Facione, 1996). Students need to develop these skills of reasoning, establish the connection between theory and practice, and apply these skills in client intervention. My interest in the development of clinical reasoning and reflective practice grew out of a particular concern for discovering how we can facilitate students to develop these skills beyond the technical rational approach that has been adopted in the past. Thus the purpose of this qualitative research is to explore the clinical reasoning and thinking of occupational therapists and students in Hong Kong within the context of the local culture. I used an action research approach informed by grounded theory. This involved a dynamic interaction between my research, teaching, and reflection in constructing and generating propositions, thus I incorporate insights about clinical reasoning development into my teaching and my teaching informs my research development. I incorporate the literature to substantiate and expand my understanding of clinical reasoning development and constructivist approaches to learning. I refer to clinical reasoning strategies that correlate with my study and suggest relationships. The past decade has seen immense change within the radiography profession internationally, as technical advancements and education and training initiatives have evolved to keep pace with the demands of the clinical environment. In Hong Kong (HK), it is necessary to establish a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) model for radiographers, to objectively monitor and assess the performance of individual radiographers throughout their working lives. Consequently, the current thesis aims: To investigate the need to implement a CPD scheme for Diagnostic Radiographers in HK, which will guide clinical performance and act as a means of monitoring the career progression of individuals within the profession. Information gained in this study will be used to identify the potential for improvement in radiography services and education via the creation of a CPD driven performance model. Objectives The objectives of this study are to: i) investigate and evaluate the current means of assessing clinical performance of Diagnostic Radiographers within the public hospitals in HK; ii) ascertain the views and opinions of relevant stakeholders on specialisation, CPD and role extension of Diagnostic Radiographers in HK; iii) suggest a CPD model for monitoring clinical performance of diagnostic radiographers at all levels of progress within the profession, based on the competencies identified and the consensus views of relevant stakeholders; iv) consult and seek professional views on the CPD model within the clinical environment in HK; v) establish a CPD model, following consultation feedback, for assessing clinical performance of Diagnostic Radiographers in HK that supports professional development.
