The value and attitude of teachers can have profound influence on shaping the character of their students. In sport, participation and discontinuation are the two most controversial topics being discussed. This study examines the motivational patterns in sport participation of pre-service physical education teachers in Hong Kong. The pre-service physical education teachers will have direct contact with children in the area of physical education and sports in one or two years' time. They will be the most important media in influencing the attitude and value of the children towards physical activities and sport. This study highlightes the conceptual links among Achievement Goals Theory (Maehr & Nicholls, 1980; Nicholls, 1984), Cognitive Evaluation Theory(Deci, 1975; Deci & Ryan, 1985) and Competence Motivation Theory (Harter, 1978) by examining the relationship between task/ego goal perspective and intrinsic/extrinsic motivational orientation. Eighty-one pre- service physical education teachers from the Hong Kong Institute of Education completed the Chinese version of Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire (TEOSQ; Duda, 1989) and Sport Motivation Scale (SMS; Pelletier et. al., 1995). The mean and standard deviations for the scores of the questionnaires were analysed to examine the motivational behavior of the subjects. Simple correlation analysis had been performed to determine the relationship between task/ego goal orientations and intrinsic/extrinsic motivational orientations. Gender differences in goal perspectives and motivational orientations had been examined by using independent sample t-tests. The results were used to compare with another sample of 59 pre-service non-PE teachers in order to examine whether RE elective and non-PE elective teachers differ in their goal perspective and motivational orientations. Learning is the focus of attention for any educational enterprise. Consequently, the quality of assessment of the extent to which learning has occurred is of crucial importance. Assessment plays an important role in education in Hong Kong as in other places. Nevertheless, how to design an assessment that is of high quality, or how to fully utilize the results of the assessment to understand more deeply about the ability of our students is a demanding task for most teachers. It is not uncommon for teachers to assume that those students who cannot get good assessment results are weak students or that they have learning problems. Teachers rarely question the quality of assessment items to be the source of problems. In other words, teachers seldom consider the possibilities that the items may be too difficult, or unsuitable for the students' levels. In fact, it is worth investigating both the students' and items' performances for the assessments in order to understand more about the ability of our students. Under such circumstances, Rasch Measurement Model is a tool that teachers may consider to assist them for interpreting and analyzing the alignment between student ability and assessment item difficulty. In Rasch modelling, the data are checked, using a set of procedures and criteria, for the extent to which they match with the theoretical model. In particular, the point-measure correlations, and the INFIT and OUTFIT statistics are used to assess the goodness of fit between model and data. This study aims to illustrate how teachers can make use of these statistics from Rasch modelling to support them in the implementation of learning oriented assessment. The study will be based on assessment data obtained from two classes of Primary Three Students in a local school in July 2006. In the study, we will focus on the implication of misfit persons and items by using Rasch Measurement Model so as to discuss ways for understanding our students and improving the items and setting

The initial and ongoing research conducted by Educational Development and Research section of Hong Kong society for Education in Art, provides a better understanding of existing teaching materials within discipline of art for both primary and secondary school. This study serves a practical purpose of exploring art teacher's perceptions and options about the chief characteristics of significant teaching materials (primarily textbook) in the subject; and traces the interrelations between art teaching and textbook in Hong Kong, from major emphasis on curriculum implementation to studio activities. To fulfill the above aims, the project would collect research data to carry forward recommendations for art subject developments and attention to those pioneers in art textbook survey and writing.

Hong Kong provides a nine-year free education to every child. There are altogether 476,582 children go to school everyday. We believe that the children are learning what we planned for them. It is only until August 1999, the public is shocked by the results of the Hong Kong Certificate of Education. It is because the result shows that in sixteen schools, half of their candidates got zero mark in their examined subjects. In one school, over 80% of the candidates got zero mark for all subjects (Sing Tao Daily, 28-8-1999, p. A3). This scenario reviews that not only the students have learnt so little after a five-year schooling but also more serious is that it rings the alarm bell of our education system. So, before it is too late, an evaluation of the learned curriculum in the primary school sector is in need. Are the official learning objectives well received and understood by our primary school students? With reference to the official curriculum, the focus of this research is to examine the primary school graduates knowledge in Art after six years study in Art and Craft.
