This study investigated the moderating effect of gender on the causal relationships between different school play activities (pretend and non-pretend play) and social competence in peer interactions among a sample of Hong Kong children. Participants were 60 Hong Kong preschoolers (mean age = 5.44, 36.67 % female). Children with matched home pretend play time period were randomly assigned to pretend or non-pretend play groups to take part in pretend or non-pretend play activities respectively in the 1-month kindergarten play training. Children's pre- and post-training social competences were assessed by their teachers. Results revealed a trend that girls who participated in school pretend play tended to be less disruptive during peer interactions after the training than those who participated in non-pretend play, while boys were similarly benefited from the two play activities. The implications for play-related research and children's social competence development are discussed.

Traditionally, the role of teachers is largely confined to the context of teaching in the classroom. Recently, teacher as the agents of change is increasingly viewed as a key factor determining the quality of modern schools. This paper aims to offer insights into how teacher leaders act as the change agents for school development in a Chinese educational context. Early childhood education in Hong Kong is selected as a research site for study. The local early childhood education sector has historically been characterized by minimum training and a modified form of apprenticeship. With the public call for quality early childhood education, the Hong Kong government has been increasing investment in teacher professional development. Given that, the qualifications of early childhood teachers have been improved in the last decade. Therefore, preschool teachers have identified themselves as professionals. Adopting a case study approach, the study reported in this paper is to examine the changing role of teacher leaders for school development. Semi-structures interviews were conducted with preschool principals, key stage coordinators (also known as student cohort coordinators), and classroom teachers to investigate their perspectives on teachers as the agent of change. The findings indicated that the key stage coordinators who are teachers holding functional posts took on leading roles beyond classroom in various areas including curriculum and pedagogy, teacher professional development, home-school collaboration, and community-school involvement. Meanwhile, the classroom teachers mainly acted as followers in the change process. The practice of teacher as change agents is emerging in early childhood education in Hong Kong where hierarchical power and structure is a pervasive source of influence. The twentieth century saw great hopes but also great failures. Philosophy, however, by its timeless truth, might confront the ever changing fashion by giving people a pointer through its philosophical application in the realm of education. In this paper, the authors argue that many philosophical teachings from the famous Greek philosophers are indeed influential when their teachings are applied to the early childhood classrooms in Hong Kong. Their sphere of influence has extended from the British colonial period to the present era in Hong Kong as far as early childhood education is concerned. For Plato, his theory of Forms and his emphasis on the search of Truth will be compared with Aristotle empiricist views in his study of nature. While analyzing the theory of Forms and the idea of the Good, the authors found that Plato's approach could be traced back to Xenophanes who proposed a monotheistic theory of God and is religiously related to Christianity. Their applications in the top-down teacher-directed play-based curriculum were valid in the early childhood educational mode during the early colonial period to the 1980s in Hong Kong. Since Aristotle was found to have a different approach to Forms as compared to those of Plato, Aristotle's argument for Forms was mentioned and its relevancy to the prevalent hybrid mode of the play-work-based curriculum in early childhood education is explored. Following the most recent reform in early childhood education in Hong Kong, free play is recommended in the reform document. Heraclitus's doctrine of ‘flux' could apply most suitably in the free play condition as ‘flux' signifies an ever changing condition just as the nature of free play does. A final touch of this paper is on exploring the divergent views of Plato and Aristotle and their impacts on education today so as to provoke further thoughts of the readers in the areas explored.

A two-wave longitudinal study on 470 parent–child dyads examined the impact of family mealtime environment, parenting style and family functioning on preschoolers' (three to six years old) learning. Measures included parent report on parenting style, family functioning, family meal frequency, mealtime television, feeding practice, teacher/parent report of academic competence and individual assessment of preschoolers' preschool concepts. Family mealtime environment variables were associated with pre-schoolers' learning, in addition to parenting style and family functioning, after controlling for family income and wave 1 preschoolers' learning. The results highlighted the importance of family mealtime environment on preschoolers' learning.

Young Chinese children acquire a substantial amount of Chinese characters during their early years. Because Character recognition is foundational to higher level Chinese reading (e.g., text comprehension, it is crucial to identify factors associated with early acquisition of Chinese characters. Chinese is a morpho-syllabic language in which each character corresponds to one morpheme and one syllable. Morphemes can be combined further in specific ways to make up words. In the kindergarten period from ages 3 to 6, Chinese children progress gradually from learning some single-character words to the vast majority of double-character words. In Hong Kong, traditional kindergartens typically start to teach children to read Chinese characters in the second semester of their first kindergarten year, when they are approximately 3.5 years old. Most Hong Kong children learn Chinese in the form of traditional script with Cantonese, which is their native language, as the medium of instruction through a teaching approach of “look and say.” Language impairment often places children at risk for reading difficulties, suggesting that meta-linguistic skills may contribute to the development of Chinese character recognition. Chinese characters contain rich visual-spatial features and relations (e.g., more than 2,000 different graphic patterns to be learned by novice readers). Consequently, some researchers have suggested that visual-spatial skills may support children’s learning of Chinese characters, especially in beginning readers. The present study aims to examine the contributions of meta-linguistic and visualspatial skills to Chinese character recognition in young Chinese children. A longitudinal sample of 106 Hong Kong Chinese children were tested a total of five times from their first to third kindergarten years. This paper explores the elements of technology leadership practice in a technology-rich kindergarten in Hong Kong. The centre head of this technology-rich kindergarten, who keens on promoting technology use, has been selected for this study. The center head and three teachers voluntarily participated in an in-depth semi-structured interview, and observations have also been operated during class activities for further confirmation. Findings show that centre head applied strategies that empowered teachers to design creative interactive activities with digital devices for teaching and learning purposes, collaborate with parents through the use of social networking system, and use new technologies in team supporting system. Six key elements are revealed from this technology-rich kindergarten, they are network learning culture development, resources enrichment, leadership empowerment, vision settlement, target achievement, and team enhancement.
