This qualitative study investigates the interplay between the ethnic and academic identity construction of a group of university students with South Asian backgrounds in Hong Kong. The findings indicate that ethnic identity and ethnic socialization have protective and facilitative effects on learning motivation and academic achievement. It is found that these ethnic minority students receiving tertiary education, holding congruent views of ethnic and academic identity, display a sense of agency and critical reflectivity of both the host society and their heritage communities and see facilitating community uplift and developing a more positive social image of ethnic minorities as their generation’s responsibility. Reconstructing an ethnic identity and developing new social images therefore motivate them to pursue academic success. The findings indicate that the South Asian students figured out ways in which to interact with the outer world and set up new roles and spaces (i.e., a heritage community with more positive social image). The findings shed light on how to provide better opportunities for and assistance to ethnic minority students when they pursue higher education. Copyright © 2019 Springer Nature B.V.

This book captures the range of views and evidence on class size across the world; seeks to clarify these deeply held views and move toward a clearer view of what we know and do not know about class size effects; and identify future steps in terms of policy and research. Of all the issues in education, debate about the effects of class sizes in schools is probably the most long standing and contentious. The time is exactly right for a text which captures a range of international research and perspectives, and allows a forum for alternative points of view, while at the same time providing an integrated editorial commentary on the key issues. This paper was inspired by three important concerns in higher education, namely, changes in higher education curricula (Bourner, 2004), concept of a fully functioning university (Bourner, 2008), and nature of education, such a university offers (Bourner, Heath, & Rospigliosi, 2013). To prepare university graduates for the unpredictable changes and diversified needs of a fast-growing world, the authors explore the use of narrative knowing in designing a student-centered curriculum. This paper provides a brief overview of current educational evaluation measures and related issues in Hong Kong. The foci of measures for discussion are quality assurance mechanisms especially school self-evaluation (SSE) and external school review (ESR), and Territory-wide System Assessment (TSA). Three questions are posed for discussion: (a) How can we promote coherence among educational reform (highlighting students' whole-person development) and educational supervision and evaluation policies (stressing academic performances) in both rhetoric and practice (b) How can we promote a systematic linkage between centralized systems (ESR, SSE, BCA/TSA) and localized systems (teacher evaluation) so as to drive school improvement/effectiveness and teacher development/effectiveness (c) How can we help relieve teachers' workload and anxieties linked with educational evaluation and foster a shared community of educational evaluation among government agencies, SSB/SMC/IMC and teachers. Self-efficacy beliefs regarding the teaching of English language in reading, writing, listening, and speaking were assessed in a sample of 55 prospective Chinese teachers who were trained to teach English as a second language in Hong Kong. These teachers reported that their sense of self-efficacy in teaching speaking and writing seemed to go together, whereas their sense of self-efficacy in teaching reading emerged as relatively distinct. Prospective teachers with teaching-practice experience did report significantly higher scores on self-efficacy in teaching speaking-writing than those without teachingpractice experience. Implications of the findings for efforts to enhance teaching performance through enhancing teaching self-efficacy are discussed. The use of information technology such as blog-based teaching portfolio is suggested to provide an avenue through which prospective teachers' self-efficacy beliefs could be closely examined to provide insights into the changes of self-efficacy in relation to teaching effectiveness. The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (Conference report, international conference on learning cities, October 21–23, Beijing, China, 2014) has promoted the idea of the learning city which highlights inclusive, lifelong learning and learning for and in the workplace as well as emphasizing quality and excellence in learning involving the use of modern technologies and the revitalization of learning in families and communities. In this chapter, we focus on the emergence and evolution of entrepreneurship education (EE) in Hong Kong, seen as a city region. In particular, we address the importance of partnerships and the participation of various stakeholders in providing quality learning opportunities. Very few studies have addressed the needs and approaches required for the continued delivery of EE programmes and activities in a sustainable way. After reviewing the literature relevant to EE, we draw on experience in Hong Kong to discuss how EE can be continued over a sustained period of time so as to create wider ranging impacts that match higher level objectives other than those at the individual level.
